Chapter 3

Holly POV

The study was a cage of glass and steel suspended over the churning Atlantic. A wall of windows framed the gray, tumultuous sea. The man standing before them seemed to draw power from the storm outside.

He was tall, dressed in a simple black cashmere sweater and dark trousers that did nothing to soften the sharp, commanding lines of his body.

He turned.

Buck Sharpe was brutally handsome, with a face that looked like it had been carved from granite and eyes the color of a winter sky.

He didn't offer me a seat.

"Mr. Foster reported your interaction with my son," he said. His voice was a low baritone, calm and controlled. "Explain your method."

It was a demand for data.

I met his gaze. "It wasn't a method, Mr. Sharpe. It was respect. I didn't invade his space. I created an invitation and allowed him to accept it on his own terms."

A flicker of something—surprise, maybe—passed through his eyes. He glanced down at the resume on his massive desk. "Johns Hopkins. Professor Finch's student. Yet you're applying to be a caregiver."

The silence that followed was an accusation.

"I have an urgent, significant financial need," I said, my voice steady. "My mother's medical bills. The salary you offered is the reason I'm here."

He was silent for a long moment, his gaze fixed on me. Assessing. Calculating.

"The job is yours," he said finally. "One-month trial. Your duties are simple: care for Noah. Get him to speak to me."

He paused, his eyes hardening.

"There is one rule. The third floor of this house is off-limits to you. You are forbidden from going there. Is that clear?"

"Crystal clear."

He gestured to Mr. Foster, who stepped forward with a tablet displaying a contract. I was about to sign when I took a breath.

This was my only chance.

"Mr. Sharpe, I have a request."

He raised an eyebrow. A silent warning.

"I need the first month's salary, the fifty thousand dollars, in advance. Today."

Mr. Foster's professional facade slipped. His eyes widened.

Buck Sharpe's gaze turned to ice. "Miss Vaughn, this is a job, not a charity."

The hope inside me collapsed.

"I understand," I said, my voice quiet but firm. "But my mother's care can't wait. Without the advance, I can't take the job. I won't be able to focus, and Noah deserves my full attention."

The silence in the room stretched, thick and heavy, broken only by the sound of waves crashing against the cliffs below. My heart pounded in my ears. I had overplayed my hand.

Just as I was about to retract the demand, he spoke, his eyes never leaving mine.

"Foster, arrange the wire transfer."

I couldn't stop the sharp intake of breath.

Buck rose from his desk and walked around to stand before me. He was even taller up close. His presence was overwhelming.

"I am not doing this for you," he said, his voice low and intense. "I am doing this for my son. Do not disappoint me."

The interview was over.

Mr. Foster led me out of the main house to a small, beautifully designed guesthouse nestled in the trees. It was more luxurious than any apartment I could ever dream of.

As I stood in the middle of the living room, my phone buzzed. A notification from my bank.

Wire transfer received. Amount: $50,000.00.

I stared at the numbers.

A single sob escaped my lips. Then another. The tears came, hot and fast, a flood of relief that left me shaking. I sank onto the sofa, my body trembling.

I immediately opened the hospital's payment portal and transferred the full amount.

Paid.

My mother was safe. For now.

Wiping the tears from my face, I looked out the window at the imposing main house. This wasn't a job. It was a transaction. I had sold my expertise to this cold, commanding man to buy my mother's life.

I thought of the silent boy, Noah.

And the forbidden third floor.

This family, and its secrets, were now my own.
