A Receipt Revealed His Double Life
Chapter 2
I reopened the video. Based on the delivery label visible in the video, I found the woman's name and her social media account.
Her name was Juliette Sinclair, and she was a small lifestyle content creator. Her profile was filled with posts flaunting her relationship.
"Today my boyfriend took me to an award-winning restaurant. He said that young, pretty women all love food."
"We checked into a love hotel that has been trending online. It felt embarrassing and thrilling at once. Even though I'm pregnant now, I still go all out for my husband."
"Seven months pregnant now. My husband reads stories to the baby every day."
I scrolled through every post and pieced together the whole truth. It turned out that all his business trips, late-night overtime, and work dinners were just excuses. Caleb had been with her the whole time.
My phone buzzed.
Caleb texted me. "Darling, I might have to work late tonight. Go to bed. Don't wait up for me."
Immediately after, he sent a transaction receipt, sent an "I love you" message, and left a one-minute voice message.
"Darling, I miss you so much. But knowing how much you support my work gives me endless motivation. Once this busy period is over, I'll make it up to you and spend more time with you."
Caleb had treated me with the same unwavering tenderness for ten years. We went from college to marriage, supporting each other every step of the way.
After we got married, I became pregnant three times and miscarried each time. To prepare my body for a healthy pregnancy, I started seeing a doctor and taking bitter medications. I often vomited after taking them, but I kept going.
Caleb sat beside me, tears welling in his eyes as he looked at me with worry. "Honey, how about we stop trying for children? You're enough for me."
He always said things like that. His tenderness always made me feel that even though I didn't have a child, having him was enough. However, after looking at the dates, I realized that Juliette must have discovered her pregnancy around that same time.
I had slept by his side for ten years, yet only now did I see how hypocritical and indifferent he really was.
I opened my contacts and found Arnold Williams, a private investigator recommended to me by a friend.
I texted him. "Arnold, I need you to keep an eye on two people tonight."
Then, I sent him the address and their photos.
"Got it. I'll follow them and record everything," he replied.
Around midnight, my phone finally buzzed. Arnold sent over a set of photos.
"They're reckless. She's already pregnant, but they're still being intimate in the car," he said.
After receiving the photos, I immediately opened the dashcam footage. The video showed that Caleb and Juliette were sharing an intimate moment in the car. His eyes were full of desire, but he still made sure to protect Juliette's swollen belly.
Juliette wrapped her arms around his neck and asked, "I'm already pregnant, why are you still doing this with me? Is your wife really that unappealing?"
Caleb laughed and gave her a playful squeeze. "She's boring and old. She can't even have children. How could she compete with a pretty pregnant woman like you?"
Juliette laughed, clearly delighted by his words. Then, she immediately kissed him on the cheek.
"Of course. But you can't blame her for being unable to carry a child. You've been secretly giving her small doses of birth control. Even if she got pregnant, it definitely wouldn't have lasted," she said.
"If she got pregnant, I wouldn't be able to divorce her easily. Our child has to be born legitimate," Caleb replied.
A wave of nausea hit me, and I rushed to the bathroom to vomit.
Grief slowly turned to hatred as I realized that my repeated miscarriages, despite my desperate attempts to conceive, were all caused by Caleb. As he pretended to comfort me while I was consumed by guilt, all he cared about was making sure my child wouldn't get in the way of his illegitimate baby.
I dug my nails into my palm to stop myself from running downstairs and killing that shameless couple.
When dawn was approaching, I heard the sound of the door opening. Caleb slipped in quietly, and he froze for a moment when he saw that the lights in the living room were still on.
"Darling, why are you still awake?" he asked.
He hurried over and pulled me into his arms. He smelled of body wash, so he must have just showered.
Caleb was really attentive, noticing even the smallest details like this. No wonder he was able to deceive me for so long.
"Were you waiting up for me?" he asked.
He touched my face tenderly. "Look at you, you even have dark circles under your eyes. Don't do this again. It hurts me to see you like this.
"Once I officially become CEO next week, let's go on vacation to Marell. I want to make it up to you properly."
