A Mirror Too Honest Novel Cover

A Mirror Too Honest

‎ ‎ ‎Sophia Hayes has perfected the art of control. In the high-pressure world of The Metropolitan, she's the youngest senior journalist ever hired-an achievement built on ruthless discipline, flawless execution, and a reputation that makes even seasoned reporters double-check their facts before speaking to her. She is sharp. Unshakeable. Precise to the bone. Her life runs on deadlines, color-coded calendars, and emotional walls tall enough to withstand anything. ‎ ‎Dean Mercer is everything she isn't-and everything she doesn't have time for. A wildly successful illustrator whose comic series Love Is a Mess has a cult following online, Dean lives in a world where structure is optional and inspiration is everything. His apartment is chaos. His sleep schedule is chaos. His heart is chaos. He creates brilliance in messy strokes but hides his deepest truths behind humor, charm, and a smile that masks more wounds than he lets on. ‎ ‎So when the magazine pairs them for a high-stakes project-a revolutionary feature blending investigative journalism with illustrated storytelling-everyone expects disaster. Sophia expects worse. ‎ ‎Their assignment: explore modern love through real stories across the city. Raw, unfiltered, unpredictable love. ‎ ‎Exactly the kind of assignment that makes Sophia want to run. ‎ ‎Dean arrives late to their first meeting with coffee stains and excuses. Sophia arrives with a binder thick enough to double as a weapon. Dean studies her timeline like it's written in a foreign language. Sophia studies Dean like he's a problem she needs to solve before he derails everything she's built. ‎ ‎Their partnership begins in sparks-sharp, heated, dangerous sparks. ‎Arguments disguised as discussions. ‎Discussions disguised as power struggles. ‎Power struggles disguised as creative differences. ‎ ‎But tension has a habit of twisting into something else when the nights grow long. ‎ ‎As they dive into the city-interviewing strangers whose love stories survived decades, storms, heartbreaks, second chances-something shifts between them. Slowly. Quietly. Against both of their wills. ‎ ‎Sophia begins to see past Dean's easy humor to the man underneath-the one who fears failing the people he cares about, who draws comics because it's the only way he knows how to tell the truth. And Dean sees the cracks in Sophia's armor-the vulnerability she protects like a secret, the softness she doesn't show, the fire in her that the world misunderstands as coldness. ‎ ‎Their conversations deepen. Their arguments soften. Their laughter blends. ‎And the chemistry-the kind they both pretend not to notice-tightens around them like an invisible thread. ‎ ‎But the closer they get, the heavier the air becomes. Because both of them are hiding something. ‎ ‎Sophia hides her fear of losing control. ‎Dean hides his fear of being the reason someone gets hurt. ‎ ‎And the feature they're creating-meant to uncover the truth about modern love-begins exposing truths they never meant to reveal. About each other. About themselves. ‎ ‎Their late-night work sessions grow intimate, electric. Their stories blur with the stories they're collecting. Dean sketches Sophia without meaning to-capturing expressions she never lets the world see. Sophia writes notes about him she can't bring herself to delete. Something real starts forming in the space between them, fragile but undeniable. ‎ ‎Until the past they both buried finds them. ‎ ‎A mistake from Dean's life-one he thought he'd left behind-reaches the editorial floor at the worst possible time. A detail with enough weight to derail the feature, shatter their progress, and wound the one person who finally saw him clearly. ‎ ‎Sophia's instinct is survival. Run before she gets hurt. Seal her heart before it cracks open. Dean's instinct is retreat. Protect her from the version of himself he fears is still true. ‎ ‎Deadlines tighten. Trust fractures. ‎Their work stalls, their communication splinters, and the connection they've been dancing around threatens to snap under the strain. ‎ ‎But desire doesn't listen to logic. ‎And hearts don't obey deadlines. ‎ ‎Even as they pull away, they keep orbiting each other-drawn back together by an ache neither can extinguish. Their arguments deepen into something rawer, heavier. Their silence holds more meaning than their words. ‎ ‎They must choose: ‎fight for the story that could define their careers... ‎or fight for the connection that could rewrite their futures. ‎ ‎And when an unexpected message, a truth revealed too late, and one irreversible decision collide, they're forced to confront the question their feature was meant to answer: ‎ ‎What does love look like today- ‎and can two people living at opposite rhythms find it before it slips through their fingers? ‎ ‎On the edge of losing their partnership... ‎their second chance... ‎and each other... ‎ ‎

Chapter 32

CHAPTER 32 - DEAN'S CHOICE, DEAN'S MISTAKE

The office was quiet now, but the silence felt fragile. Papers were still scattered across the floor, evidence of the storm that had passed through moments earlier. Sophia sat at her desk, hands gripping the edge, trying to steady herself. The adrenaline that had kept her alert had ebbed, leaving her drained-and painfully aware of the closeness she now felt for Dean.

Dean, on the other side of the room, was on the phone, his voice low and controlled, every syllable calculated. His brow furrowed, hands tightening around the receiver.

"You understand what I'm asking?" he said, his tone uncharacteristically sharp. "This isn't negotiable. She stays out of it. No exceptions."

Sophia's stomach dropped as she listened from a distance. She didn't need to hear more to understand. Dean was making a decision-one that would keep her physically safe, but at a cost she couldn't yet measure.

When he hung up, he turned to her, forcing a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "I've arranged for someone to... help keep things secure. You'll be fine. Just... trust me."

Sophia's hands fell to her lap. "Trust you? Dean, I already know what happens when you make these decisions alone. You think protecting me means excluding me from the truth-but it just... it breaks us. Every time."

Dean stepped closer, exhaling slowly. "I can't risk it. Not now. Not after everything. You don't know the full scope yet."

Her chest tightened, frustration and fear intertwining. "And you don't trust me to handle it? To be part of the solution? Or... is it just easier for you to make the choices and shield me?"

Dean's jaw tightened. "I can't risk losing you. I can't."

Dean moved toward the office door, clearly intent on acting before Sophia could stop him. She stood, reaching for his arm.

"Dean... wait. Please. Talk to me. Don't just... decide."

He hesitated, eyes flicking toward hers, full of conflict. "Sophia... I'm trying to protect you. If I don't act now, the visitor will escalate. You could get hurt. I can't let that happen."

"But by excluding me? By lying? That's not protection. That's control," Sophia snapped, voice trembling. "And you're destroying the trust we've spent months building!"

Dean closed his eyes briefly, leaning his forehead against his hand. "I know. I'm aware. And I hate that I'm doing this, but I don't see another way. You have to believe me... this is for us."

Sophia's heart ached. She wanted to believe him, but the betrayal was immediate and raw. She stepped back, putting physical space between them.

"Dean... I can't. Not this time. I can't let you decide for me."

Dean's shoulders slumped, but he forced his mask of composure back into place. "I have no choice. I'm sorry. Truly. I'll explain everything after it's over. But I can't risk it now."

Sophia's mind raced. She wanted to reach for him, to argue, to fight for honesty and partnership. But part of her feared that doing so would make him retreat further into secrecy.

"You're pushing me away," she said quietly, voice breaking. "You think this is protection, but it feels like betrayal."

Dean's expression softened briefly, tinged with regret. "It's not betrayal. Not my intent. I'm doing this because I care about you more than anything. I just... can't show it in the way you want me to right now."

Sophia shook her head, tears threatening. "I don't know if I can survive another 'I can't show you now.' Dean... I've already survived so much chaos, but this... this hurts in a different way. It hurts because I trusted you."

Dean's hands fell to his sides, helpless. "I... I'll explain everything later. I promise. But please... believe me when I say this is to keep you safe."

Even as Dean spoke, Sophia couldn't shake the sense that the storm outside-both literal and figurative-was closing in. Every shadow in the office seemed darker, every sound louder, as though the visitor's presence was lingering just beyond the walls.

She felt an icy dread settle over her. Dean's decision, however well-intentioned, had left her vulnerable-not just physically, but emotionally. She had been blindsided by his choice, left with no control, and that lack of agency burned.

Dean noticed her glance toward the window. "Sophia... it's going to be okay. Trust me, please. Just... stay calm."

Sophia's voice was tight. "Stay calm? Dean... you've made a choice that affects me, without asking me. And now I'm supposed to stay calm?"

Dean's hand reached for hers, but she stepped back. The emotional chasm between them, created by his protective instinct, felt wider than ever.

Hours passed in tense silence. Dean monitored communications, security updates, and the visitor's movements, while Sophia sat quietly, wrestling with the mix of fear, hurt, and lingering love. She wanted to hate him for making the decision alone, but part of her couldn't stop caring.

Dean caught her gaze once, and his expression was heavy with regret. "Sophia... I don't want this to hurt you. I never do. I just... I have to try to protect you."

Sophia swallowed hard. "And I get that. But protecting me doesn't mean taking away my right to know. It doesn't mean making decisions for me. It just... it just breaks something inside me."

Dean didn't respond. He knew she was right. But his fear for her safety had outweighed his judgment, leaving a rift that felt impossible to bridge in that moment.

A sudden alert on Dean's phone pulled both of them from their fractured silence. The visitor had moved. They were closer than before-inside the building, in a place Dean hadn't anticipated.

Dean's voice was tense, controlled, but the underlying fear was unmistakable. "They're here. And we have to act fast."

Sophia's heart pounded. She wanted to argue, to demand that Dean include her, but the fear of immediate danger froze her.

Dean grabbed her hand, his grip firm, protective. "Stay close. Whatever happens, we face it together."

Sophia nodded, fear and love intertwining. "Together."

The office door rattled violently-an unmistakable warning that the visitor was no longer outside, and Dean's choice to protect her had triggered consequences neither of them could ignore.

Dean makes a decision meant to protect Sophia, but it fractures trust and creates emotional distance. The visitor has infiltrated closer than ever, escalating danger and suspense.

The office door rattled again, louder this time, accompanied by a low, deliberate knock. Sophia's chest tightened. Fear coiled in her stomach, sharp and insistent.

Dean's hand gripped hers tightly. "Stay behind me. No sudden moves," he whispered, voice taut with tension.

Sophia's eyes narrowed, scanning the doorway. She could sense the visitor's presence without seeing them-an oppressive aura that made the hairs on her arms stand on end. The danger that had been looming now felt immediate, pressing.

Dean exhaled slowly. "I made a choice to protect you... I thought it was the only way. But now, with them inside, I see the consequences."

Sophia's voice trembled. "Dean... your choice put both of us at risk. You can't protect me by cutting me out. That doesn't work. I need to be part of this. I'm not fragile."

Dean's jaw tightened, eyes hard with guilt and resolve. "I know. And I should have trusted you. I thought I could handle it alone. I was wrong."

Before Sophia could respond, the door burst open.

The visitor stepped in, eyes scanning the room with cold precision. "Dean," they said, voice low, sharp. "You thought you could shield her from the truth. You were mistaken. And now..."

Dean positioned himself between Sophia and the intruder, fists clenched, every muscle coiled like a spring. "I won't let you-"

"Stop." Sophia's voice cut through the tension. Her heart pounded, but the fear was tempered by determination. "Dean... let me handle this. I'm not hiding anymore."

Dean froze. "Sophia-"

"No," she said firmly, stepping forward. "You chose to exclude me, and it almost cost us everything. Now I decide how I face this."

The visitor smirked. "Ah... the protégée finally finds her courage. How touching."

Sophia swallowed her fear, feeling the bond between her and Dean strengthen, even amid chaos. She knew he was right behind her, and together, they formed a unit-something far more powerful than Dean's solitary protection.

The visitor lunged toward the desk, intending to snatch documents and destabilize their position. Sophia reacted instantly, shoving a chair into the intruder's path. Dean moved with precision, blocking attacks, grabbing papers midair, protecting her.

The office became a whirlwind of movement-papers flying, chairs tipping, pens and mugs crashing to the floor. Adrenaline surged through Sophia. Fear and thrill mingled, but unlike before, she refused to stay behind.

"Dean... look out!" she shouted as the visitor spun toward him.

Dean pivoted, narrowly avoiding a strike. He glanced at Sophia, astonished at her composure. "You're... handling this?"

Sophia's jaw tightened. "I told you-I'm not fragile. I can face this with you."

Dean's eyes softened for the briefest moment, admiration and concern mingling. But there was no time for sentiment-they were still in danger.

The visitor faltered slightly, recognizing the change in dynamic. Dean was no longer acting alone, and Sophia was no longer the protected. They were a team.

Dean caught Sophia's gaze. "I should have trusted you from the start. I'm sorry. I'll never make that mistake again."

Sophia exhaled, even as adrenaline coursed through her veins. "I don't want apologies. I want honesty. I want to face the storm with you... not behind a wall you build alone."

Dean nodded, voice low but steady. "Then no more walls. From now on... everything we face, we face together. No exceptions."

The visitor's eyes narrowed. "Interesting... but courage alone doesn't win battles. It's time to see if you can survive the reckoning."

The intruder moved swiftly, aiming to separate them. Dean's instincts kicked in-he shoved Sophia behind him and blocked the strike. Papers and folders scattered like autumn leaves in a gust of wind.

Sophia felt the pull of fear, but also the undeniable bond between them. Their closeness in that moment-the physical proximity, the shared danger-cemented a trust deeper than words.

"We survive this together," Dean murmured, voice low, almost a caress.

Sophia nodded, holding his gaze. "Together. And no matter what happens... I'm not letting go."

The visitor paused, assessing. "We shall see. This is far from over. The consequences of your choices will unfold-and they will leave no room for weakness."

Dean's hand remained tightly around Sophia's as they faced the intruder, papers and debris swirling around them. Every instinct screamed that danger was immediate and escalating, but together, they were stronger than before.

Dean whispered, almost to himself: "I'll never let you face this alone again... not ever."

Sophia's heart beat rapidly, a mixture of fear, love, and determination. "Then we survive it together. Whatever it takes."

The visitor's shadow loomed closer, and the storm of Dean's past, his choices, and the consequences of his protective mistake was about to collide head-on with the reality they had to face.

Outside, the rain battered the windows harder, the storm echoing the chaos inside.

Inside, Sophia and Dean braced for impact-emotional, physical, and dangerous-knowing that the next moments would define everything about trust, love, and survival.

Dean's protective choice fractures trust, but Sophia steps up to confront the danger with him. Together, they face the visitor, cementing their emotional bond, as their external threat escalates.
