Chapter 3

The first pale light of dawn crept through the bedroom curtains, finding Hilary right where the night had left her. She hadn't slept a wink. The locked door remained untouched—a quiet confirmation that there was truly nothing left to salvage.

Her mother's fragile heart couldn't handle the truth, not today. Sitting at her vanity, Hilary applied her makeup with steady precision, concealing the exhaustion and hollow shadows beneath a flawless foundation, and slipped into a demure Chanel suit. For her mother's sake, she would play the devoted Mrs. Carlisle one last time.

She met Julian in the hallway as he emerged from the guest room. He was already dressed in another impeccable suit, looking refreshed, as if the ugliness of the previous night had never happened.

"Ready?" he asked, his tone all business. "My mother pushed our lunch to tomorrow. Right now, we need to go see your mother at the hospital."

They sounded like two colleagues heading to a meeting.

Hilary simply nodded, not trusting her voice.

The drive to the hospital was silent. The chauffeur focused on the road, a glass partition separating them from the suffocating tension in the back seat. Hilary stared out the window, the city streets blurring past as the image of Julian and his other family played on a loop in her mind.

Her mother, Janet Fitzgerald, was in a private room at New York-Presbyterian for a recurring heart issue. Seeing her daughter and son-in-law arrive together brought a weak smile to her pale face.

"Julian, you're so busy. Thank you for coming," Janet said, her voice frail. She clearly adored her son-in-law, the man who had secured the Fitzgerald family's future.

"Of course, Mother," Julian replied, his smile flawless. He set the lavish fruit basket on the bedside table, poured a warm cup of water for Janet, and draped a steady, affectionate arm around Hilary's waist. In front of her mother, his touch was warm, protective, and impeccably rehearsed.

Hilary stiffened under the weight of his arm, fighting the sour taste rising in her throat.

The moment his phone buzzed in his pocket, his hand dropped instantly from her waist. He glanced at the screen, his expression shifting, and stepped out into the hallway without another word.

Janet took her daughter's hand. "Hilary, did you and Julian have a fight?" she whispered. "You seem upset."

"No, Mom. I'm just tired," Hilary lied, forcing a smile. She couldn't burden her sick mother with the truth.

"You need to communicate," Janet advised, patting her hand. "Julian is a good man. He's successful, and he's been so good to our family. You need to hurry up and give him a child. That's what makes a marriage strong."

A child. The words were a physical blow. He already had a five-year-old son. Did he really need another one from her?

Her face must have paled further, but she just murmured, "I know, Mom."

Julian returned, his expression hurried. "Something's come up at the office. I have to go."

He leaned down, gave Janet a polite farewell kiss on the cheek, then looked at Hilary. "You stay and spend some more time with your mother. I'll have the driver pick you up later."

He didn't wait for a reply, just turned and strode out of the room, his back straight and unforgiving.

Hilary stayed for another hour. Soon, her father, Richard Fitzgerald, arrived. He took one look at the lavish fruit basket on the bedside table and nodded in satisfaction.

"I hear Julian was just here," Richard said, turning his stern, calculating gaze toward his daughter. He placed a heavy hand on her shoulder. "You're lucky to have a husband like him, Hilary. If it weren't for the Carlisle Group, our family would have gone under years ago. Whatever petty disagreements you two have, swallow your pride. Don't you dare do anything to jeopardize this marriage."

"Your father is right, darling," Janet murmured weakly from the bed, patting her hand. "Be a good wife."

Their voices surrounded her like a tightening vise, the weight of their expectations pressing the air from her lungs.

Feeling completely claustrophobic, Hilary forced a stiff nod, made a quiet excuse, and slipped out of the room. She didn't call the driver. An impulse she couldn't explain made her want to see if Julian had really gone to the office.

She sat down in the lobby coffee shop, her eyes fixed on the bank of elevators. She wasn't sure what she was hoping to find, or what she was afraid of finding.

Half an hour later, a familiar figure emerged from a separate VIP elevator across the lobby.

It was Julian.

He hadn't left the hospital.

He was on the phone, his profile turned towards her. The expression on his face was one she had never seen directed at her. It was soft, patient.

He was speaking in a low voice, gesturing with one hand, a small, indulgent smile playing on his lips.

It wasn't the polite smile he gave to business partners or the respectful one he gave to her parents. It was the tender smile of a lover.

A sour, acidic feeling churned in Hilary's stomach. She instinctively shrank behind a large marble column, her heart hammering.

She watched as Julian ended the call. He didn't leave. Instead, he turned and walked into a high-end children's boutique next to the elevator.

A few minutes later, he emerged carrying a sleek gift bag tied with a ribbon.

He walked back to the VIP elevator and disappeared inside.

Hilary felt a chill spread through her body. The phone call. The tender expression. The gift bag. It all clicked into place.

His "emergency at the office" was right here, in the same hospital, just on a different floor. With his other family.

She leaned against the column, her chest tightening as she watched him disappear into the elevator.
