Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.

I felt it happen while I was standing at Leland's bedside, pressing a cold compress to the silver-laced wound splitting his temple. Three days I'd kept this vigil without sleep. Three days watching the poison crawl through his veins like black thread beneath his skin. The Healer had said the silver was lodged too deep to extract—that we could only wait and hope his Alpha blood burned it out before it reached his wolf.

I'd spent seventy-two hours hoping.

Then Leland opened his eyes, and his gaze passed over my face like I was furniture.

The mate mark on my neck went cold. Not painful—not yet—just suddenly, deeply wrong, like someone had opened a window in the middle of winter and all the warmth had been sucked out of the room. I pressed my palm to it instinctively. The skin beneath my fingers felt normal. But the bond underneath—the invisible channel that had hummed between us for five years—had gone silent.

Leland's expression hardened. His wolf surfaced behind his eyes, and I waited for the flicker of recognition, the softening I'd seen a thousand mornings before.

It didn't come.

Instead, his lip curled. A low snarl built in his chest, the sound a wolf makes at an intruder, and I went very still.

"Who let you in here?" His voice came out rough, scraped raw from three days of unconsciousness, but the Alpha tone underneath was unmistakable—that specific frequency that makes every wolf in earshot want to bare their throat.

I opened my mouth. No sound came out.

Behind me, I heard Beta Rowan shift his weight. Two guards stood at the door. The Healer had stepped back against the far wall. Everyone was staring at the floor now, the way wolves do when they don't want to be part of what's happening.

"I said, who let you in?" Leland pushed himself up on one elbow, and I saw him wince—the silver was still there, still burning—but he didn't look away from me. His wolf was fully present now, and it was looking at me like I was a threat.

I set the compress down on the nightstand. My hands were steady. I made sure of that.

"I'm your mate," I said quietly. "I've been here since they brought you in."

His eyes narrowed. "I don't know you."

The mark on my neck pulsed once—a deep, searching throb, like the bond was trying to find its other half and coming up empty—and then it went still. Cold. Hollow.

My wolf stirred for the first time in years.

She'd been so quiet for so long, buried under the wolfsbane suppression the foster pack had dosed me with since childhood. I'd grown used to the silence. But now she was pressing against the inside of my ribs, clawing at the chemical cage, and the sound she made—low, keening, wrong—echoed only in my skull.

"Leland." I kept my voice level. "You were in an ambush three days ago. Silver to the head. The Healer said—"

"I don't care what the Healer said." He swung his legs over the side of the bed, and Rowan stepped forward instinctively, then stopped when Leland's Alpha aura flared. "Get Sylvie. Now."

The room went silent.

I heard my own heartbeat. I heard the Healer's shallow breathing. I heard Rowan's boot scrape against the floor.

"Sylvie Mills," Leland said, slower now, like he was talking to someone dim. "Tell her I need her."

My wolf slammed against the suppression hard enough that I felt my knees buckle. I locked them. I would not fall. Not here. Not in front of him.

"Alpha," Rowan said carefully, "Sylvie isn't—"

"That's an order, Beta."

Rowan's jaw worked. Then he looked at me.

I met his gaze and shook my head once. Small. Final.

I turned and walked out of the room before anyone could see my hands start to shake.

Sylvie arrived two hours later.

I was in the corridor outside Leland's quarters when I saw her coming up the main stairs, moving fast, her face flushed like she'd been running. She'd come too quickly. Like she'd been close. Like she'd been waiting.

She swept past me without a glance, and I pressed myself against the wall to let her through.

The door opened. Closed.

I stood there, my palm flat against the cold stone, and listened.

Leland's voice, low and relieved: "You're here."

Sylvie's voice, soft and breathless: "I came as soon as I heard."

A long silence. Then a sound I knew too well—the specific rhythm of a wolf breathing in a mate's scent, drawing it deep, letting it settle.

"God," Leland murmured. "I thought I'd lost you."

The mark on my neck went from cold to numb.

I pushed off the wall and walked.

I didn't know where I was going until I found myself in the metalsmith workshop at the far end of the east wing—the place I'd spent my first year at Ironveil, learning to work silver with my own hands. The room smelled like coal dust and old metal. No one came here anymore.

I pulled the door shut behind me and locked it.

Then I sat down on the floor, pressed my back against the workbench, and let my wolf keen.

She didn't stop for hours.
