Two Voices Within
Chapter 3
I looked at my husband, who had finally arrived late at my hospital bed.
My expression was cold, tinged with sorrow.
He lowered his head, avoiding my gaze, and simply held the hand I had resting on my belly.
"Honey, are you okay?"
I shook my head, pulling my hand away from his.
"Honey, what do you think about aborting both our babies? One has a deformity, and the other inherited my allergies. Even if they're born, they're bound to be frail and sickly.
"Why not terminate both and try again for a healthy child?"
My husband's guilty expression stiffened, a frown making its way onto his face. "What are you talking about? You know as well as I do how difficult it was for us to conceive?"
Inside me, Lucky's voice turned pitiful, "Mommy, don't abandon me! My cleft can be treated with surgery, and I can bring even more riches to you! With enough time, I can make you the richest person in the world!"
Sunny was quiet for a moment, before he said, "As long as you're happy and healthy, that's all that matters. I don't need to exist."
I suppressed the pain in my heart, as if it were being sliced apart, and said firmly, "I have to perform an abortion. I won't allow the heir of the Waltons to be sickly."
Seeing how resolute I was, my husband had no choice but to relent.
After all, he was the weaker one in this relationship. Even though he'd helped secure many major deals within the family business, it didn't change the fact that the company belonged to the Waltons, not him.
"Alright, alright… I really can't win against you."
He tried to pull me into his arms, but I quietly avoided him.
That afternoon, I booked an examination at a top private hospital.
One of the babies was well-nourished and healthy. The other was frail, barely clinging to life.
Rage surged within me. I immediately scheduled an induced abortion for the next day.
But the moment I left the hospital and stepped into the underground parking lot, I was drugged and knocked out.
When I opened my eyes again, my husband was standing in front of me, his face full of disapproval.
"I thought you were just joking, but are you really going to let our lucky star die? Something's definitely wrong with your state of mind, so stay here and repent!"
His blunt, unapologetic tone left me in disbelief.
Who gave him the nerve to speak to me like this?
But after saying that, he turned and walked away without hesitation, leaving me confined in the room, only sending food and herbal tonics at mealtimes.
It felt like they were trying to fatten me up again, just like before.
Sharpening my resolve, I flipped out a window that hadn't been locked and stood on the ledge, trying to see if I could jump onto the neighbouring roof.
Suddenly, a sharp pain twisted through my abdomen. Lucky's voice carried a hint of panic.
"Sunny, stop kicking Mommy, this isn't the time!
"Ah, Mommy! Sunny's scratching inside your womb with his fingernails, and he even wrapped his umbilical cord around my neck!"
As Lucky's voice grew louder and louder, the pain in my abdomen grew, but what worried me most was my child's safety.
Gritting through the pain, I leapt forward with all my strength and finally landed on the neighboring roof.
If I had fallen, three lives would have been lost in an instant!
