Chapter 1

The sacred grove hummed with ancient power as hundreds of pack members gathered under the full moon's silver light. Tonight was the mating ceremony—the night that would determine the rest of my life.

I stood among the unmated she-wolves, my heart hammering against my ribs as the ceremonial drums echoed through the clearing. The white ceremonial dress clung to my nervous, trembling body, and I could feel Luna, my inner wolf, pacing restlessly beneath my skin.

"Easy," I whispered to her. "Tonight we find our mate."

The other she-wolves around me giggled and whispered excitedly, but I remained silent, my eyes scanning the crowd of unmated males. Somewhere among them was my destined partner—the one the Moon Goddess had chosen for me.

Alpha Dominic Kane stood at the ceremonial altar, his commanding presence drawing every eye in the grove. Even in the moonlight, his dark hair gleamed, and his powerful frame radiated the authority that made him one of the most feared Alphas in the region. At twenty-eight, he was still unmated—a fact that had the entire pack buzzing with speculation.

My breath caught as our eyes met across the clearing.

The world tilted.

Every nerve in my body ignited as an invisible force slammed into me with the power of a freight train. The mate bond. It wrapped around my heart like molten gold, pulling me toward him with an intensity that made my knees buckle.

"Mate!" Luna howled in my mind, her voice filled with pure joy. "Mate! He's ours!"

Dominic's golden eyes widened, his nostrils flaring as he caught my scent. I watched his chest rise and fall rapidly, saw his hands clench into fists at his sides. He felt it too—the sacred connection that bound our souls.

The pack fell silent, sensing the shift in energy. Elder Marcus stepped forward, his weathered face breaking into a smile.

"The Moon Goddess has spoken," he announced, his voice carrying across the grove. "Alpha Dominic Kane and Scarlett Rose are destined mates."

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. I was nobody special—an orphan raised by the pack, daughter of warriors who died when I was just a child. But the mate bond didn't care about status or bloodlines.

I took a trembling step toward the altar, toward my Alpha, toward my future. This was it—the moment I'd dreamed of since I was a little girl. I would finally have a family, a place where I truly belonged.

But Dominic didn't move toward me.

Instead, his face hardened into a mask of cold stone. The warmth in his golden eyes died, replaced by something that made my blood freeze.

"I feel the bond," he said, his voice carrying clearly through the stunned silence. Each word hit me like a physical blow. "But I won't accept you."

The grove erupted in shocked murmurs. I stood frozen, the ceremonial flowers falling from my numb fingers to scatter on the ground like broken dreams.

"Alpha?" Elder Marcus stammered, clearly as stunned as everyone else. "The mate bond is sacred. The Moon Goddess—"

"The Moon Goddess made a mistake," Dominic cut him off, his voice harsh and final. "Vivienne Ashford has returned. She's alive."

My world shattered.

Vivienne. His childhood sweetheart. The she-wolf who had supposedly died in a rogue attack three years ago. The woman he'd mourned so publicly that the entire pack had grieved with him.

"She was taken by rogues," Dominic continued, his eyes never leaving mine, as if he wanted to make sure I understood every word. "She escaped. She's back, and she's the only woman I will ever love."

Luna whimpered in my mind, a sound of pure heartbreak that echoed my own. "But we're his mate," she whispered. "We're supposed to be together."

I wanted to run. I wanted to disappear into the forest and never face the hundreds of eyes staring at me with a mixture of pity and shock. But my feet remained rooted to the spot, as if the earth itself was holding me captive to witness my own humiliation.

"Dominic," I managed to whisper, my voice barely audible. "The bond—"

"Is nothing more than biology," he said coldly. "A chemical reaction. It doesn't mean anything."

The casual cruelty in his voice hit me harder than any physical blow could have. Around us, the pack watched in horrified silence as their Alpha publicly rejected his fated mate—something that went against every law and tradition we held sacred.

"You want me to just... ignore it?" I asked, hating how small my voice sounded.

"I want you to understand your place," he replied, stepping closer. His scent—pine and leather and something uniquely him—made Luna howl with longing even as my heart broke. "You'll remain as Luna in name only. For pack stability. The position comes with money, status, everything you could want materially."

I stared at him, unable to believe what I was hearing. "You want me to be a decoration?"

"I want you to stay out of my personal life," he said bluntly. "Don't expect anything from me beyond what's required for appearances. No intimacy. No marking. No real relationship. Just... exist quietly."

Each word was a dagger to my heart. I glanced around the grove, seeing the mixture of shock, pity, and disgust on the faces of my packmates. Some looked angry on my behalf, others seemed embarrassed to witness such a public humiliation.

Maya, my best friend, pushed through the crowd, her face flushed with fury. "You can't do this!" she shouted at Dominic. "The mate bond is sacred! You're going against the Moon Goddess herself!"

"The Moon Goddess will understand," Dominic said coldly. "True love trumps biology."

He turned away from me then, scanning the crowd until his eyes found what he was looking for. Vivienne Ashford stepped out from behind a group of elders, and my heart clenched at the sight of her.

She was everything I wasn't—delicate where I was strong, ethereal where I was earthy. Her platinum blonde hair cascaded down her back like spun moonlight, and her pale blue eyes held a fragility that made every male in the pack want to protect her.

Dominic's entire demeanor changed as he looked at her. The cold mask fell away, replaced by a tenderness that made my chest ache with envy.

"Vivienne," he said softly, walking toward her. "My love."

She ran to him, throwing herself into his arms with a sob. "Oh, Dominic! I thought I'd never see you again!"

They embraced in front of the entire pack, in front of me, while the mate bond twisted in my chest like a living thing in agony. I watched my destined mate hold another woman, whisper sweet words in her ear, stroke her hair with infinite gentleness.

Everything he would never give me.

"This is wrong," Luna whispered in my mind, her voice weak with pain. "We're dying inside."

I knew she was right. I could feel something fundamental breaking inside me, some essential part of my soul cracking under the weight of this rejection.

But I was still standing. I was still breathing. And I was learning something important about myself in this moment of ultimate humiliation.

I was stronger than I'd ever imagined.

"Fine," I said quietly, but my voice carried in the stunned silence. Dominic and Vivienne broke apart to look at me. "I accept your terms, Alpha."

Dominic's eyes narrowed, as if he'd expected me to fight or beg or make a scene. My calm acceptance seemed to unsettle him.

"Good," he said finally. "We understand each other."

He took Vivienne's hand and led her away from the altar, away from the sacred grove, away from me. The pack began to disperse in uncomfortable silence, leaving me standing alone where I should have been claimed, marked, and celebrated.

Maya rushed to my side, her eyes blazing with fury. "Scarlett, you can't just accept this! Fight for what's yours!"

I looked at her, then at the retreating figures of Dominic and Vivienne. "What exactly am I supposed to fight for, Maya? A man who just told the entire pack that I mean nothing to him?"

"The mate bond—"

"Means nothing if only one person honors it," I finished quietly.

But even as I said the words, I could feel the bond pulsing between us, a golden thread that connected my heart to his no matter how much he wanted to deny it. And deep in my chest, beneath the pain and humiliation, a small flame of determination began to burn.

Dominic Kane thought he could ignore the will of the Moon Goddess.

He was about to learn just how wrong he was.
