Renouncing My False Bond

I smoothed down my simple gray dress for the tenth time, trying to appear composed as I stood at the edge of the Silver Creek Pack's grand meeting hall. Today was no ordinary gathering—Alpha King William Cross himself was visiting our territory with his entourage. The air crackled with tension and excitement. Every pack member had their role during these formal alliance meetings. Mine was to remain invisible. As a wolfless werewolf—a shameful anomaly—I was only permitted to attend because Ryan had insisted. Ryan Mitchell, my childhood sweetheart, the Beta's son, and the only reason I hadn't been cast out as a rogue years ago. Chapter 1

"They're arriving," Ryan whispered, squeezing my hand briefly before moving to his position near the front. His touch steadied my nerves, as it always had since we were children. After my mother's suicide, he'd been my anchor in a world that saw me as defective.

The massive oak doors swung open, and the Alpha King entered, his overwhelming aura sweeping through the room like a physical force. I kept my eyes lowered respectfully, but couldn't help stealing a glance at the young woman who followed him—Madison Cross, his daughter, her chin tilted high with unmistakable arrogance.

Our Alpha stepped forward with the traditional greeting, but before he could complete the ceremonial welcome, Madison strode directly toward the refreshment table, bypassing the formal introduction circle entirely.

"Excuse me," I said softly, stepping forward before I could stop myself. "The welcome ceremony hasn't concluded yet. It's pack protocol that—"

"Protocol?" Madison's voice cut through the silence like a knife. "And who might you be to lecture me on protocol?"

All eyes turned to us. My heart hammered against my ribs as I realized my mistake. I wasn't supposed to speak. I wasn't supposed to be noticed.

"I apologize," I murmured, dropping my gaze. "I meant no disrespect."

I expected Ryan to remain silent—to pretend he didn't know me, as he often did in public gatherings. Instead, he stepped forward, and for one breathtaking moment, I thought he might defend me.

"Alpha King, honored guests," Ryan announced, his voice carrying across the now-silent hall. "Please forgive this interruption. Emma doesn't understand her place." He paused, and his next words shattered my world. "She hasn't awakened her wolf yet, even at twenty-one. We keep her around out of... compassion."

Gasps and murmurs rippled through the visiting Alphas. Madison's lips curved into a satisfied smirk.

"How interesting," she purred. "A full-grown werewolf without a wolf. I thought such defects were... handled in childhood."

Tears burned behind my eyes as Ryan laughed—actually laughed—at her cruel comment. The sound of his betrayal echoed in my ears as I backed away, then turned and fled from the hall.

I ran until my lungs burned, finally collapsing in the narrow corridor leading to my quarters in the Omega section. Sobs tore from my throat as Ryan's words replayed in my mind. *We keep her around out of compassion.* All these years, I'd believed we shared a special bond—perhaps even a mate bond, though I couldn't scent him properly without my wolf. Had it all been pity?

Back in my cramped quarters—little more than a glorified closet compared to the spacious rooms of higher-ranked pack members—I curled into myself on my narrow bed. Through the thin walls, I could hear the whispers of other Omegas.

"Poor thing, thinking she had a chance with the Beta's son."

"Did you see how he threw her to the wolves? Literally."

A soft knock interrupted their gossip. My uncle Marcus stood in the doorway, his expression a mixture of pity and discomfort.

"Emma," he sighed, sitting awkwardly at the edge of my bed. "You shouldn't have spoken out of turn."

"He humiliated me," I whispered, my voice raw. "In front of everyone."

"Ryan is advancing in the pack," Marcus said, as if that explained everything. "The Alpha King's daughter took notice of him today. That's... that's good for all of us, really. You should be happy for him."

I stared at my uncle in disbelief. Since taking me in after my mother's death, he had never once truly defended me. Always, always, the pack hierarchy came first.

"I need to rest," I said flatly.

After he left, I lay awake until dawn, something hardening inside me with each passing hour.

The next morning, I dragged myself to the training grounds as usual. The other wolves were already paired off for combat practice. I began the solitary drills assigned to me—strengthening exercises that might someday help me if my wolf ever awakened.

Mid-pushup, I stopped. A strange calm washed over me as I rose to my feet and walked directly to Ryan's father, our Beta.

"Sir," I said, my voice trembling but determined. "I'm withdrawing from the training program."

His eyebrows shot up. "You understand what this means for your already precarious rank?"

"I do."

"Ryan won't be pleased," he warned.

Something inside me—something that had bent and bent for years without breaking—finally snapped.

"That's no longer my concern," I replied, turning away before he could see the dangerous glint in my eyes.

I packed my training gear methodically, aware of the stares and whispers around me. For the first time in my life, I wasn't defining my worth by what others thought of me—especially not by what Ryan Mitchell thought of me.

And it felt like the first breath after a lifetime of drowning.

The silver flute felt warm against my palms as I stood beneath the Shadowcrest Pavilion's moonlit arch, its familiar weight grounding me in this moment I'd dreamed of for three years. The Inter-Pack Gathering stretched before me like a sea of expectant faces—hundreds of werewolves from across the East Coast, their eyes reflecting the ceremonial torches that cast dancing shadows across the ancient stone amphitheater. My fingers traced the intricate engravings on grandmother's flute, the same patterns she'd taught me to read like sacred text. Tonight, I would perform the Moonrise Serenade, a piece so complex that only a handful of wolves in our generation could master it. Alexander had promised me this moment, had whispered against my ear just hours ago that I would make him proud. The autumn wind carried the mingled scents of different packs—pine from the northern territories, salt from the coastal clans, earth from the mountain dwellers. But underneath it all was Alexander's commanding presence, cedarwood and smoke, wrapping around me like an invisible claim. "My fellow Alphas, Betas, and honored pack members," Alexander's voice boomed across the gathering, that familiar authority that made my wolf purr with pride. He stood at the center of the ceremonial circle, magnificent in his formal black attire, every inch the powerful leader who'd chosen me. "Tonight marks not only our annual celebration of unity, but a moment of profound significance for the Shadowcrest Pack." I straightened, preparing for my introduction.

The dawn was gray and unforgiving, much like the ache that settled deep in my marrow. I knelt on the damp earth of the sacred grove behind the Black Moon Pack house, my knees pressed into the cold soil. I am Celine Stone, the last daughter of a bloodline that has stitched the wounds of werewolves for centuries, yet the only life I couldn't seem to save was my own. I closed my eyes, gripping the moonstone pendant that rested against my collarbone. It was warm, pulsing with the last of my mother’s magic. I reached out with my senses, finding the tether that bound me to Drake. His wolf was a flickering shadow, a dying ember that I had to fan into a flame every single month. "Live," I whispered, the word scraping my throat. Silver light bled from my fingertips, sinking into the ground and traveling through the unseen bond. The pain was immediate—a sharp, tearing sensation as my vitality was siphoned away to patch the cracks in his aura.

The silver needle slipped into the flesh just beneath Cameron’s collarbone. He didn't flinch. He never did. In the heavy, incense-choked air of our hidden ritual chamber, the only sound was my own ragged breathing. The new moon offered no light from the skylight above, leaving us bathed in the flickering, bruised glow of a single black candle. I pressed the tip of my thumb against the needle’s eye, letting a single, heavy bead of my blood slide down the silver shaft and into his skin. *Breathe,* I told myself, fighting the dizziness. I watched his left hand. The creeping, ash-gray necrosis that had begun to claim his fingertips two days ago slowly dissolved, replaced by the stolen, rosy hue of the living. Five years of this.

I recently joined an online parenting group for werewolf mothers and came across a post that caught my attention: “Hello everyone, I’m the other woman, and I’ve had a pup with my mate. I don’t want to raise him. What should I do?” A response quickly followed: “If his Luna hasn’t had any pups, have your mate claim the pup was found in a rogue orphanage and let her raise him.” “You two can enjoy your lives together freely for a few years. Once the pup grows up, he can reject her.” “In the end, you’ll be the one who comes out on top.” My frown deepened as I read this, my fingers tightening around my phone. That evening, my mate Porter, a Delta of the Silver Moon Pack, returned home from his duties. I was just about to share the news of my pregnancy when he spoke up first, his voice tense. “We’ve been mated all these years without pups. Maybe we should consider adopting one?” My heart skipped a beat, the memory of the post flashing in my mind. I hesitated before responding, wanting to probe further. “Why don’t we give it another try?

3 a.m. A call from the healer’s den shattered the illusion of a six-year mate bond. When Meadow, the pack healer, handed me the diamond ring and key card taken from my mate outside the ICU, the depths of his betrayal hit me—tainted with blood and deceit. *** Twenty minutes later, I rushed into the healer’s den, my heart pounding in my chest. Dr. Gregory Perry, the lead pack healer, stood with a somber expression. His alpha tone, though calm, carried the weight of authority. “Luna Kaylee, your mate is in hypovolemic shock. Initial assessment suggests… a foreign object was inserted, causing severe urethral tears and damage to an artery.” My breath hitched. “What… do you mean?” My mind spun with confusion, the bond between us flickering faintly in the back of my awareness.

The Moon Ceremony designs had taken me three weeks to perfect. Each symbol, each color choice was carefully selected to honor our pack's heritage while incorporating modern elements that would make Devon proud. I couldn't wait to show him. "I've finished the ceremonial arrangements early," I told Beta Marcus as we left the inter-pack planning meeting. "I should be able to surprise Devon before dinner." Marcus nodded, his expression unreadable. "You've outdone yourself this time, Luna Emersyn. The Silver Lake Pack will be impressed." I smiled, tucking my portfolio closer to my chest. Three years as Luna of the Moonstone Pack had taught me the importance of these ceremonies. They weren't just traditions—they were the glue that held our pack together. The familiar scent of pine and earth that always lingered around our pack house hit me as I approached our private quarters.
