Rejected Luna's Comeback Novel Cover

Rejected Luna's Comeback

The sacred flames of the Moon Goddess Festival danced against the twilight sky, casting flickering shadows across the ceremonial grounds of Silver Crest Pack. I stood beside Evan, my mate of seven years, watching our pack members gather in reverent silence around the ancient altar. The autumn air carried the scent of burning sage and cedar, but underneath those familiar fragrances, something else lingered—something that made my wolf restless. "You seem distracted tonight," I murmured to Evan, noting how his eyes kept darting toward the tree line instead of focusing on Elder Marcus as he began the opening prayers. Evan's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. "Just ensuring pack security. You know how important tonight is." But his words felt hollow, rehearsed. Over the past month, he'd been disappearing for hours without explanation, claiming pack business that never seemed to materialize in any reports. His phone buzzed constantly with messages he'd quickly hide, and when I'd asked about the unfamiliar floral scent clinging to his clothes, he'd brushed off my concerns with irritation. As the ceremony progressed, my unease deepened.

Chapter 1

You know how important tonight is."

But his words felt hollow, rehearsed.

The scent I'd been catching traces of for weeks was stronger tonight—vanilla and jasmine, definitely feminine, definitely not from our pack. My heightened Luna senses, a rare gift that had helped me support Evan's leadership for years, were screaming warnings I couldn't ignore.

"The Moon Goddess blesses those who honor the sacred bonds of mate-ship," Elder Marcus intoned, his weathered voice carrying across the gathering. "Tonight, we celebrate the divine connections that strengthen our pack."

The irony wasn't lost on me. I touched the mate mark on my neck unconsciously, the spot where Evan had claimed me seven years ago when my family's ancient bloodline had helped secure his Alpha position. Back then, I'd believed we were destined, that our bond would last forever.

Evan shifted beside me, and I caught him glancing toward the ceremonial altar again. This time, I followed his gaze.

My blood turned to ice.

Behind the sacred altar, partially hidden by the ancient oak that had witnessed countless mating ceremonies, two figures were locked in an intimate embrace. The moonlight illuminated them clearly—Evan's distinctive broad shoulders and dark hair, and a petite woman with auburn curls who definitely wasn't me.

But it was what she wore that made my world shatter completely.

Around her neck gleamed my grandmother's silver and moonstone necklace, the Edwards family heirloom that had been passed down through generations of Lunas. The necklace that was meant to be worn only by the true Luna of our pack. The necklace I'd entrusted to Evan for safekeeping just last week.

Azalea Hart. I recognized her now—an Omega from the neighboring Crescent Moon Pack. She'd been attending our inter-pack gatherings for months, always hovering at the edges, always watching Evan with those wide, innocent eyes.

My hands began to tremble as the pieces fell into place. The mysterious absences. The foreign scents. The way he'd grown distant and cold in our bed. The phone calls he'd take in private.

"Sarah?" someone whispered beside me, but their voice sounded like it was coming from underwater.

Rage, pure and burning, surged through my veins. Not just at the betrayal, but at the desecration. That necklace represented five generations of Edwards women who had led with dignity and strength. To see it adorning the neck of his... his whore... while she pressed herself against my mate behind the sacred altar of the Moon Goddess herself...

I was moving before conscious thought took hold.

"How dare you!" The words tore from my throat as I stormed toward the altar, my Luna aura flaring with such intensity that pack members instinctively stepped back. "How dare you defile the sacred grounds!"

Azalea gasped and stumbled backward, her hand flying to the stolen necklace. Evan spun around, his face cycling through shock, guilt, and then hardening into something I'd never seen before—cold calculation.

"Sarah, stop," he commanded, but I was beyond stopping.

"That necklace belongs to the Luna of this pack!" I snarled, lunging for Azalea. "You have no right—"

My claws extended as my wolf pushed forward, and I raked them across Azalea's shoulder, tearing the delicate fabric of her dress and leaving thin lines of blood. She screamed and fell to her knees, clutching the necklace protectively.

"ENOUGH!" Evan's Alpha tone slammed into me like a physical blow, forcing me to my knees beside his mistress. The power in his voice was absolute, commanding, designed to make me submit.

But what came next was worse than any physical pain.

"I, Evan Edwards, Alpha of Silver Crest Pack," his voice rang out across the stunned gathering, formal and final, "reject you, Sarah Edwards, as my mate and Luna."

The words hit me like silver bullets to the chest. Around us, the entire pack had gone deathly silent, their faces reflecting horror and disbelief.

"I choose Azalea Hart as my mate," Evan continued, his hand moving protectively to Azalea's shoulder. "She will be the Luna this pack deserves."

The sacred flames seemed to flicker in response to his words, and I felt something fundamental tear inside my chest—not just my heart, but the very bond that had connected us for seven years.

My knees ached against the cold marble floor of the Pack House ballroom. I'd been scrubbing for hours, the bristles of the brush wearing my palms raw until they burned with every stroke. The full moon hung fat and silver outside the tall windows, casting long shadows across the polished floor I'd cleaned three times already. Tonight was Bryce's eighteenth birthday. His Alpha ceremony. I pushed a strand of dark hair from my face with the back of my wrist, careful not to touch my skin with my wet, reddened hands. The ballroom had to be perfect. Alpha Marcus had made that clear this morning when he'd found me in the kitchen helping Mom with breakfast. "The Omega girl will prepare the ballroom," he'd said, not even looking at me. "Alone." I was Hazel Mitchell, the orphan the Bloodmoon Pack had taken in out of charity.

The first whiff of smoke reached me through the ventilation system—a faint, acrid scent that made my nostrils flare. I paused in front of the mirror, my fingers still adjusting the collar of my blouse. Tonight was supposed to be Declan's "Chosen Mate" ceremony—a cruel mockery of what should have been our moment. "Probably just someone burning leaves nearby," I muttered, trying to ignore the knot in my stomach. But the smell grew stronger. Too strong. I followed the scent to the kitchen, where wisps of gray smoke curled from beneath the refrigerator. My heart hammered against my ribs as I yanked the appliance away from the wall, revealing frayed wires sparking against the wooden floor. "Shit," I whispered, backing away as flames licked upward, hungry and swift. Panic surged through me as I lunged for the nearest exit—the French doors leading to the garden.

He glanced at it the way powerful men glance at things they have already decided to sign — a performance of consideration, nothing more. I signed my name at the bottom. Alayna Riley. Neat, unhurried, final. "The booking runs from seven to midnight," I said. "No scent-marking. No physical contact beyond what the social situation requires.

The coastal road stretched before us, winding through ancient pine forests that gave way to breathtaking ocean views. I kept my eyes on the road, but my attention was divided between the winding coastal highway and the trembling figure beside me. "Are you okay, Sasha?" I asked, glancing at my sister-in-law huddled in the passenger seat. Her fingers clutched a small velvet pouch containing her scent-soothing artifacts—her lifeline in a world that often overwhelmed her senses. "I'm fine," she whispered, though her voice betrayed her anxiety. "Just... thank you for bringing me here, Anastasia." I reached across the console and squeezed her hand. "Of course. The Moonlight Bay Territory is the perfect place for you to heal. No one will judge you here." Sasha's wolf had been dormant since the rogue attack three years ago—the attack she'd suffered while saving my mate, August.

The sound of the boat's engine cut through the morning mist as I stood on the dock, my hands clasped neatly in front of me. Today was supposed to be a celebration—Xavier's Coming-of-Age ceremony—but my stomach twisted with dread. Two years of careful cultivation were at stake, and I couldn't afford any disruptions. I smoothed down my simple white lab coat, a stark contrast to the expensive designer clothes Xavier preferred. The boat docked with a gentle bump against the wooden pier, and I straightened my spine, preparing myself for another day of playing the meek, wolfless healer. "Welcome to Moonflower Island," I said softly as Xavier stepped onto the dock, his tall frame casting a shadow over me. "I've prepared the facilities for your celebration." Xavier didn't even glance my way. His attention was fixed on Makayla, who emerged from the boat's cabin like a vision in a flowing sundress that highlighted her curves. He wrapped his arm possessively around her waist, pulling her close. "Finally," he said, his voice carrying across the water.
