Chapter 2

Twin beams of halogen cut through the iron gates, washing over the courtyard gravel.

Before Maya’s tires even skidded to a halt, the front doors of Blackridge Manor slammed open. Victor Laurent marched down the stone steps, Celine trailing a pace behind him in an embroidered cashmere coat. Behind them, Isla clutched Damon’s oversized silk shirt around her frame, eyes puffy, chin trembling.

"Seraphina!" my father boomed, his deep voice carrying across the drive. "Get away from those gates this instant."

I didn't step back. The night air burned against my skin, but inside, I felt like frosted glass.

"Don't tell me what to do," I said.

Victor reached me first, grabbing my arm just above the elbow. "Do you have any idea how many sentries patrol this perimeter? You're throwing a tantrum outside like an undisciplined rogue. Walk back into the house."

I wrenched my arm out of his grasp. "A tantrum? Your darling Isla was in my bed with my Mate ten minutes ago!"

"Keep your voice down," Victor hissed between gritted teeth. His graying brows pinched tight. "Damon is the most powerful Alpha in the eastern territories. The Laurent family secured this alliance through three years of political maneuvering. You do not burn pack diplomacy down over a momentary indiscretion."

"An indiscretion?" A harsh bark of laughter scraped my throat. "He was stripping her in our bedroom, Father!"

"Men with Damon's rank have appetites," Victor said coldly, not blinking. "A sensible Luna looks the other way, secures her household, and protects her family’s standing. You swallow your childish pride and you endure it."

"Endure it?" My voice rose, slicing cleanly through the cold wind. "Just like my mother endured you?"

Victor's jaw locked.

Celine hurried forward, slipping her hand gently into Victor's elbow, her face painted with tragic sympathy. "Sera, sweetheart, please don't dig up the past. We're only trying to save you from ruining your own marriage."

"Don't you dare speak to me, Celine," I snarled, turning on her.

"Watch your tone with her," Victor snapped instantly.

"Why? Because the truth makes your stomach turn?" I stepped right into his space, chest heaving. "Twenty years ago, my mother was coughing up blood in the municipal clinic, dying of lung rot while you moved Celine into our guest wing! You gave her my mother’s jewelry. You let her sit at the head of our table before my mother's body was even cold in the dirt!"

"Seraphina, shut your mouth," Victor ordered, his eyes flaring amber with Alpha aggression.

"And now you brought Isla here to do the exact same thing to me!" I pointed straight at Isla, who shrank back against the porch rail with a soft whimper. "You groomed her to be Celine number two! Did you tell her to steal Damon, Father? Did you tell her that breaking a Luna’s bond is just family tradition?"

The crack split the courtyard silence.

The strike snapped my head sideways.

My cheek caught fire instantly. The iron taste of blood bloomed against my back molars.

I didn't cry out. I didn't raise a hand to touch the burning welt.

Instead, I looked straight ahead at the dark pine trees, and a bizarre, quiet smile pulled at the corner of my lips.

"You insolent brat," Victor growled, shaking his stinging hand. "You show zero respect for this family. You never have. I should have taught you your place years ago."

The phantom ache in my chest died.

Every thread of warmth, every desperate little girl inside me who had spent twenty years working twice as hard just to earn a nod from this man—vanished. It didn't crack; it simply turned to ash. I had bled for his pack. I had married Damon to solidify his borders. And I had never, for one single second, possessed a father.

"Sera..." Isla snuffled from behind Victor's shoulder, peeking out with wide, wet eyes. "I never meant to hurt you, really! It just... Damon and I have this connection. We tried to fight it, but he was so lonely whenever you were away at the archives..."

Celine stroked Isla's shoulder, then offered me a soft, pitying sigh. "Sera, darling, Isla is just a young girl who loves Damon too much to hide it. As an older sister, shouldn't you want her happiness? Damon can take her as a second mate under pack law. You can still keep your title. Why make everyone suffer when you can just be gracious and step aside?"

"Be gracious?"

"Step aside for what?" a razor-sharp voice interrupted.

A car door slammed with the force of a gunshot.

Maya strode past the open gate, her sleek black trench coat fluttering in the wind. Her phone was raised high at chest level, the green camera light glowing steadily in the dark.

"Keep talking, Councilor Laurent," Maya said, her lip curling in pure disgust. "My phone is streaming directly to three pack magistrates and the regional press council. Please, tell the public again how you strike your eldest daughter for refusing to share her Mate with her half-sister."

Victor's face drained of color. "Maya! Turn that damn thing off!"

"Take one step toward me, Victor, and I'll send the raw footage to the High Alpha's desk before you reach the bumper," Maya warned, stepping firmly between me and the Laurents. She slipped an arm around my waist, anchoring me. "From this day on, every single bruise, every shred of betrayal she suffered under your hands, will become an invoice you cannot afford to pay."

Celine recoiled, her false maternal warmth vanishing into a scowl. "This is private Laurent pack business, Maya. You have no jurisdiction here."

"I have enough money to buy your entire council district, Celine, so shut your mouth before I buy your mortgage," Maya fired back without flinching.

Maya tugged my arm. "Come on, Sera. We're leaving."

I turned my back on them.

"Seraphina."

A hand clamped down on my right wrist like a steel vice.

The grip was familiar, burning with the faint, suffocating pull of the dying mate bond.

Damon stood there.

He had pulled on a dark wool coat over his unbuttoned shirt. His silver hair blew across his forehead, his slate-gray eyes churning with a storm of fury and possessive panic.

"You're not leaving," Damon said, his fingers digging into my pulse point. "You are my Luna. Get back inside. We deal with this as a pack."

I looked down at his fingers on my skin. Then I looked up into his eyes.

"Let go of me, Damon."

"No," he growled, pulling me toward him by three inches. "You don't get to walk out on our bond because of a single fight."

I ripped my hand out of his grip with every ounce of physical power left in my body, dragging my knuckles across his coat buttons until skin tore.

"You already chose her," I whispered, the words steady and quiet enough to freeze the blood in his veins. "Now, you've lost me too."

Damon's face went completely rigid, his hand hanging empty in the freezing air.

I didn't wait for his reply. I turned, climbed into the passenger seat of Maya's car, and pulled the door shut with a heavy thud.

The engine roared. Maya threw the car into reverse, spun the wheel across the gravel, and tore out through the iron gates. In the rearview mirror, Damon's tall, solitary figure stood motionless under the courtyard lanterns, watching us disappear into the midnight fog.

Beside him, Victor pulled out his private satellite phone, frantically dialing a number that made Maya’s navigation screen suddenly flicker with red interference warnings.
