Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the King

The sound of Katie's laughter echoing across the training grounds had always been my favorite melody. Today, it turned into something that would haunt me forever. I watched from the sidelines as my six-year-old daughter practiced her basic wolf stance with the other pack children, her small frame radiating the natural confidence that came with being an Alpha's heir. The afternoon sun caught the golden highlights in her dark hair—hair so much like Cameron's that it never failed to make my heart swell with pride. "She's getting stronger every day," Elena Dixon commented beside me, though her tone carried that familiar edge of criticism. "Though she could use more discipline. You're too soft with her, Melissa." I bit back my usual response. After six years of marriage to Cameron, I'd learned to pick my battles with his mother. "She's still young," I said instead, keeping my voice level. That's when it happened.

Chapter 2

I was so incensed by his words that I collapsed onto the floor. Oddly, I wasn’t even surprised. No wonder he’d become increasingly impatient with me lately, no wonder each time I asked him to accompany me to a prenatal check-up or help with picking up a package, he always had an excuse ready… It all added up now. The laughable thing was that I had been coming up with excuses for him, wondering if he was having a tough time in the pack.

All my illusions and self-deception came crashing down. I stood up angrily. “Eden, you’re repulsive!”

Eden wasn’t bothered by my insult; instead, he grinned with even more smugness. “Elizabeth, curse all you want. You’re already pregnant with my child. You’re tied to the Richardson family for life now.”

“Who’s going to trust you with pack responsibilities when you’re pregnant?”

His words took me back to the time I first found out I was pregnant. Eden and I were both warriors in the Moonstone Pack. He was a Delta, while I was the Beta, just waiting for my mate pairing with him to solidify my position as Gamma. But then, I found out I was a month pregnant.

Eden was elated when he found out and insisted that I should keep the pup. “Sweetheart, remember when we completed the mate bond? We said we’d definitely have a strong little one!”

“You’re still young. It’s the perfect time to have a pup, and you’ll bounce back quickly. If you’re worried, my mom can help take care of them. Don’t worry about it, just go ahead.”

“As for pack duties, I’ll always have your back, no matter what. You can leave the Gamma responsibilities to me, right?”

Back then, I thought, we’re mates, so it doesn’t matter who holds the position. Coupled with Eden’s sweet talk, I didn’t notice anything off. Before long, I stepped back from my Beta duties due to the pregnancy, while Eden was promoted to Gamma in my stead. Looking back now, how could I have been so gullible? Eden had been plotting all along—my pregnancy allowed him to gain a pup while effortlessly snagging my position in the pack hierarchy. What a win for him: triumph both in our bond and in his rank!

As this realization hit, my expression grew even darker. Eden, however, finished his meal, pushed the food container forward, and said, “I’m off to training now. Clean up the table! Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you get to slack off.”

“You think leading warriors is easy for me, unlike you, who just lounges around all day! Mate pairing with me is the best thing that ever happened to you!”

The scent of medicinal herbs and dried blood filled my nostrils as consciousness slowly returned to me. My eyelids felt impossibly heavy, but I forced them open, blinking against the dim light of the Healer's Den. Pain radiated through my body in dull, throbbing waves. I tried to move, only to feel the sticky dampness of my silver-grey fur still matted with blood and rain. Memories came back in flashes – running patrol at the northern border, the sudden ambush of rogues, claws tearing into my flank, the thunderous storm that had disoriented me as I fought for my life. I remembered calling out to Blake through our mate bond, desperate for help as darkness claimed me. "Blake," I whispered, my voice hoarse and barely audible. Through blurred vision, I could make out his tall figure across the room. My Alpha. My mate.

The biting wind of the Northern Territories had been my only companion for three years, stripping away the softness of my youth until I felt as jagged as the ice that covered the landscape. But as the familiar scent of pine and damp earth filled my nose, my heart dared to beat a little faster. Home. I was finally home. I tightened the threadbare cloak around my shoulders, my fingers brushing against the rough fabric. It was a stark contrast to the silks I used to wear as the Beta’s daughter, but survival had taught me to value warmth over beauty. In my mind, I pictured Chandler. Three years of letters, three years of holding onto the promise of his hazel eyes and the mate bond that would surely snap into place the moment we reunited. I imagined him waiting at the border, his arms open, ready to apologize for the necessity of my exile and welcome his Luna home. But the border was empty of Alpha blood.

Ten years. Ten years of my life given to this man, to this pack, to this mate bond that I thought was sacred. I stood frozen in the doorway of our bedroom, watching as Lucas adjusted his tie in the mirror, his broad shoulders squared with the confidence of an Alpha who had never doubted his worth. "Are you ready for tonight?" I asked softly, smoothing down the silk dress I'd chosen for our anniversary dinner. "The pack is gathering in the main hall." Lucas barely glanced my way. "Change of plans, Naomi. We're not attending." My fingers stilled on the fabric. "What? But it's our tenth anniversary. The entire pack has prepared—" "I've made my decision." His tone carried that familiar edge of finality that brooked no argument.

I knew something was wrong before she even stepped out of the car. I was standing on the front steps of the Shadowvale pack house, a mug of tea going cold in my hands, when the black SUV pulled through the main gates. The morning was sharp and grey, the kind of early autumn day that smells like wet bark and coming rain. I watched the driver circle around to the passenger side, and then I watched him lift out a wheelchair. She was already arranged in it perfectly. Back straight. Neck brace fitted just so. A soft cream blanket across her lap, pale hands folded on top of it like something painted. Camilla Shaw looked up at the pack house the way a woman looks at a thing she has always believed belongs to her. I pressed two fingers against my side, just under my right ribs.
