Chapter 1

I’m just an Omega from a rural pack, but I saved the Lycan Prince.

His Highness brought me to the city, but it’s like he’s a completely different person now.

He avoids me like I’m some kind of plague, disgusted by my lack of etiquette and refinement.

Then, at the Moonlight Festival, the Lycan King offered to arrange a mate for me.

My gaze swept past the Prince, landing on the Beta who’d been flirting with me all evening.

“Your Majesty,” I said, pointing at him, “he’s the most handsome. I choose him.”

There were two loud clatters—one as the Prince dropped his goblet, the other as the Beta knocked over his plate, grinning from ear to ear.

“That’s settled then,” he said, his dimples deepening. “I’m the most handsome, so you’re stuck with me.”

==============================

“Miss Zoey, the Prince is busy and can’t see you.”

I’d barely stepped foot near the palace gates when I was stopped.

Zaiden, the Omega servant by the Prince’s side, looked at me apologetically. “You should go back.”

I clutched the kite in my hands, hesitating. “When… when will he be free?”

“He’s tied up for the next few days. You should try again later.”

His tone was dismissive, and even I could tell it was just an excuse.

For the past two weeks, I’d come to the palace every day, hoping to see Oscar Pierce.

When I first arrived in the city, he’d still meet with me.

But he wouldn’t talk to me, wouldn’t even look at me.

Every time, he’d just sit in his study, eyes fixed on the documents in front of him.

Then he’d glance up and gesture for me to leave.

If I said anything, he’d just grunt, “Hm.”

Sometimes, if I talked too much, he’d wave me off impatiently. “Get out.”

It seemed like today would be another day I wouldn’t see him.

I turned to leave.

But after just a few steps, I nearly collided with a woman.

She was dressed in gold and jewels, her scent overpoweringly sweet.

Zaiden, who’d been so indifferent to me, rushed to greet her, bowing deeply. “Princess Alondra.”

The Princess glanced at me and asked, “Is this the one…?”

“Yes,” Zaiden nodded, ushering her in. “Your Highness, please, the Prince has been waiting for you.”

She swept past without sparing me another look.

I stood there, clutching the kite in my hands.

The doors that had been closed to me for weeks now shut in my face once again.

The greenhouse was my sanctuary in a pack house that had never felt like home. Dawn hadn't yet broken when I slipped inside, the familiar scent of damp soil and blooming flowers wrapping around me like an embrace I'd long been denied elsewhere. My fingers trembled slightly as I reached for the watering can—a weakness I couldn't afford to show outside these glass walls. I focused on the white lilies, my favorites. Their pure petals reminded me of what I once was—hopeful, untainted. Before the mate bond that became my prison. "You're wilting too, aren't you?" I whispered to a drooping bloom, gently supporting its stem. My wolf, Luna, whimpered softly in the back of my mind. Once silver and strong, she now barely stirred, weakened by the sickness that had been consuming us both since I gave too much blood to save William three years ago. A sudden tremor ran through my bones, stronger than the usual morning weakness.

The morning of my mate ceremony dawned with a brilliance that matched the lightness in my heart. I stood before the mirror in my ceremonial dress—silver silk that caught the sunlight streaming through my window, embroidered with the Silvermoon Pack symbol over my heart. My fingers trembled as I adjusted the delicate crescent moon pendant at my throat. "Today's the day," my wolf, Luna, whispered inside me. "Today Archer claims us as his." I smiled, feeling her excitement mirror my own. After years of waiting, of knowing in our souls that Archer Gibson was our destined mate, we would finally complete the bond that had been growing between us since childhood. "Helen!" Elena, Archer's younger sister, burst into my room without knocking. "Everyone's gathering at the ceremonial grounds. Archer sent me to make sure you're ready." I nodded, unable to speak past the lump of emotion in my throat. Elena's eyes sparkled with happiness for me—she had always been my strongest supporter in the pack.

The sacred grounds of the Shadowclaw Pack glowed under the waxing moon as I stood at the altar, my white ceremonial gown whispering against the cool night air. My heart hammered against my ribs—not from fear, but from the weight of what this moment meant. The future of both our packs rested on this union. "Are you ready?" Elder Morris asked, his weathered face solemn as he held the ancient binding scroll. I nodded, my fingers instinctively touching my throat where Jake's mark would soon be placed. "I am." The crowd of both Crescent Moon and Shadowclaw wolves fell silent as Jake approached, his Alpha aura rippling through the clearing. He looked every bit the future Alpha in his formal attire, though something in his eyes seemed distant tonight. "By the power of the Moon Goddess," Elder Morris began, "we gather to witness the joining of two bloodlines, two packs, two souls—" A commotion erupted at the edge of the gathering. Gasps and whispers rippled through the crowd as a figure pushed through the assembled wolves. "Stop!" The voice was female, desperate and breathless.

The bonfire for the Summer Solstice Run roared against the night sky, sending sparks dancing toward the moon, but I had never felt colder. Three years. Three years of blood and exhaustion, of negotiating with hostile Alphas and surviving rogue attacks that should have killed me. Three years of believing that when I finally came home, Colin would be waiting. The Silvermoon Pack territory stretched before me as I crossed the border, familiar and achingly wrong all at once. My wolf stirred weakly inside me—she'd barely recovered from the cliff fall two months ago, when rogues ambushed us in the neutral lands. The jagged scar along my ribcage still ached with every breath, a reminder of how close I'd come to never making it home at all. But I had made it. Colin's dream of becoming the most powerful Alpha King was within reach, built on the foundation I'd laid with my own broken bones and spilled blood. The pack house came into view, and my heart clenched.
