Chapter 2

I woke to white walls and the smell of antiseptic.

My body felt distant. Heavy. Like it belonged to someone else and I was just borrowing it for a while. I blinked at the ceiling—smooth, sterile, nothing like the carved beams of Ironveil's pack house—and tried to remember how I'd gotten here.

Then I felt the emptiness.

My wolf was gone. Not dead. I would have felt that—a severing, a final silence. This was different. She was there, somewhere behind a wall I couldn't see through, couldn't reach. Dormant. The word arrived in my mind like something I'd always known.

I tried to shift. Nothing happened. My body stayed human, unresponsive, like I'd forgotten the most basic thing I'd ever learned.

The door opened. My father walked in.

Elder Cyrus Archer looked exactly as he always did—measured, composed, his Council robes replaced by a dark suit that made him look more like a lawyer than a Lycan. He stopped at the foot of my bed and met my eyes.

"Catalina," he said quietly.

I didn't answer. I looked down at myself instead. Hospital gown. IV line in my left arm. Monitors beeping softly beside the bed. My hand moved to my stomach.

Flat.

"The pup?" My voice came out rough, like I'd been screaming.

Cyrus's jaw tightened. "Gone. I'm sorry."

I nodded. I'd known. I'd felt it happen on that floor, the sharp wet pain, the blood spreading beneath me while dozens of wolves stood frozen and did nothing. I'd known.

It still felt like being gutted.

"Your wolf is dormant," Cyrus continued. His voice was careful, clinical, the way you'd deliver a medical report to someone you were trying not to break. "Not dead. The trauma of the half-severed bond created a protective barrier. She's behind it. Unreachable for now. You cannot shift. You cannot mind-link. Your healing will be human-slow."

I absorbed that. Filed it away.

"Reed?" I asked.

Cyrus's expression hardened. "He announced Faye Diaz as his Luna-elect three hours after you collapsed. The Mate Ceremony is scheduled in twenty-six days."

Twenty-six days.

I looked at the IV line. Clear fluid dripping into my vein, keeping me alive while my body tried to remember how to function without the wolf that had been part of me since I was fourteen.

"I need water," I said.

Cyrus poured it from the pitcher on the side table. I drank slowly. My throat hurt. Everything hurt, but it was distant, muffled, like pain happening to someone else.

I set the glass down and looked at my father.

"I need the full text of the Luna Accord," I said.

Cyrus went very still. "Catalina—"

"The full text," I repeated. "Every clause. Every procedural requirement. I want it in writing, and I want it now."

He studied my face for a long moment. Then he pulled his phone from his pocket, typed something, and handed it to me.

I read it twice. Then I read it again.

The Luna Accord was old—older than most of the packs currently standing, a legal framework established when the Lycan Council first formed to prevent Alphas from discarding Lunas without consequence. The language was formal, archaic in places, but the mechanism was clear.

Any Luna whose bond was broken through Alpha oath-violation could invoke a Council tribunal. The biological evidence—the mark itself—could not be fabricated or contested. If the mark still carried the Luna's bond signature and showed visible distress when invoked, it was proof. Undeniable. The Alpha would be stripped of title before the tribunal adjourned.

I handed the phone back.

"I'm invoking it," I said.

Cyrus exhaled slowly. "You understand what that means. You'll have to testify. Publicly. In front of the Council and every allied pack within three territories. Reed will fight it."

"Let him," I said. My voice was flat. Empty. "I want a recording device. Voice only. I'll dictate the formal invocation now."

"You should rest—"

"Now," I said.

He looked at me for another moment, then nodded and left the room.

When he returned, he had a small digital recorder. He set it on the table beside my bed, pressed record, and stepped back.

I took a breath. Then I spoke.

"I, Catalina Archer, daughter of Elder Cyrus Archer of the Lycan Council, marked Luna of the Ironveil Pack, do formally invoke the Luna Accord as established under Council Law, Section Four, Subsection Nine."

My voice was steady. Measured. I'd spent three years negotiating alliances. I knew how to make words into weapons.

"On the fourteenth of March, three years prior, Alpha Reed of Ironveil marked me as his mate and Luna in the presence of his pack and Council witnesses. I served Ironveil faithfully for three years, brokering alliances with the Eastern Ridge Pack, the Crescent Valley Pack, and the Northbrook Pack. I carried his pup. On the sixth of October, at 10:14 in the morning, Alpha Reed spoke the formal rejection vow in the center of Ironveil's banquet hall while I stood three feet away, five months pregnant, in front of seventy-three witnesses."

I paused. Let the silence hold.

"The bond was severed mid-vow. I collapsed. I miscarried on the pack-house floor. No healer was summoned. Alpha Reed left the hall with Faye Diaz while I bled."

Another pause.

"The mark Alpha Reed placed on my neck three years ago still carries my bond signature. It is embedded in his skin. He cannot remove it. If this invocation is delivered in his presence, the mark will crack open and bleed visibly. This is biological testimony. It cannot be contested."

I looked at my father.

"I invoke the Luna Accord. I demand a Council tribunal. I name the following witnesses..."

I listed them. Every Beta who'd stood in that hall. Every Luna who'd watched me fall. Every wolf who'd done nothing.

When I finished, Cyrus stopped the recording.

"I'll deliver this to the Council judge tonight," he said quietly. "The tribunal will convene within two weeks."

I nodded.

Then I reached for my phone—they'd left it on the side table, screen dark—and opened my contacts.

Three names. Three Betas. Men I'd cultivated personally over three years of careful alliance work. Men who owed me.

I typed the same message to all three.

*This is Catalina Archer. I have invoked the Luna Accord. The Council will require your witnessed statement regarding the events of October sixth. I trust you will provide it accurately.*

I hit send.

Then I set the phone down, leaned back against the pillows, and closed my eyes.

Reed's alliance network—the one I'd built for him, piece by piece, over three years—was about to burn.

And I was going to be the one holding the match.
