My Husband Tried to Kill Me for His Chosen Luna Novel Cover

My Husband Tried to Kill Me for His Chosen Luna

The coastal road stretched before us, winding through ancient pine forests that gave way to breathtaking ocean views. I kept my eyes on the road, but my attention was divided between the winding coastal highway and the trembling figure beside me. "Are you okay, Sasha?" I asked, glancing at my sister-in-law huddled in the passenger seat. Her fingers clutched a small velvet pouch containing her scent-soothing artifacts—her lifeline in a world that often overwhelmed her senses. "I'm fine," she whispered, though her voice betrayed her anxiety. "Just... thank you for bringing me here, Anastasia." I reached across the console and squeezed her hand. "Of course. The Moonlight Bay Territory is the perfect place for you to heal. No one will judge you here." Sasha's wolf had been dormant since the rogue attack three years ago—the attack she'd suffered while saving my mate, August.

Chapter 2

The air between us crackled with tension as Demi's words hung in the air. My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin, sensing the threat before my human mind could fully process it. But as Demi gestured dismissively, something caught the light at her throat—a brilliant blue glint that made my breath catch.

My eyes locked onto the pendant hanging from her neck. A teardrop-shaped sapphire set in ancient silver, surrounded by tiny moonstone beads that captured and reflected the light. I knew it instantly.

"The Moon Goddess's Tear," I whispered, my voice barely audible.

Demi's hand flew to the necklace, her fingers caressing the gem with obvious pride. "Oh, this old thing? August gave it to me as a symbol of our bond."

The world seemed to tilt beneath my feet. That "old thing" was no ordinary necklace. It was a sacred artifact, passed down through generations of Lunas in the Silver Claw Pack. Elena had shown it to me during my first year as Luna, explaining that it would be mine during the Pack Anniversary celebration next month.

"It's not his to give," I said, my voice steady despite the rage building inside me. "It belongs to the Luna of Silver Claw Pack."

Demi laughed, the sound like breaking glass. "Oh, honey. You still think you're Luna? August has already commissioned my ceremony. We're just waiting for the right moment to announce it."

Sasha trembled beside me, her eyes wide with fear. I placed a protective hand on her shoulder, drawing strength from her presence even as I prepared to confront this intruder.

"I am Luna Anastasia Reed," I said, letting my Luna tone fill the space between us. The power in my voice made the receptionist flinch, but Demi merely smirked. "That necklace is a sacred artifact meant only for the true Luna. Return it to me and vacate these premises immediately."

Demi's laughter echoed through the villa. "You're so funny with your outdated traditions. August chose me because I satisfy him in ways a boring traditionalist like you never could." She stepped closer, her scent—that cloying, artificial smell—making my wolf recoil. "He says I'm his chosen mate. Not his fated mate. There's a difference."

"Chosen?" I repeated, the word tasting bitter on my tongue.

"Exactly." Demi's smile widened, revealing teeth that seemed too sharp somehow. "Fated mates are just an old myth. August believes in choosing his own destiny." She gestured around the villa. "And he chose me."

My hands shook with barely contained fury. August hadn't just betrayed me—he'd stolen a sacred artifact from our pack and given it to this... this counterfeit Luna.

"He's wrong," I said, my voice low and dangerous. "The Moon Goddess's will cannot be defied."

"Can't be defied?" Demi laughed again. "Honey, I'm wearing her tear around my neck, and guess what? Nothing's happened to me."

I closed my eyes, fighting for control. My wolf howled inside me, demanding release, demanding justice. But Sasha needed me to be strong, not feral.

I reached for the mind-link that connected me to August. It was our most intimate connection—the sacred bond that had formed when we mated. Through it, I could share images, emotions, thoughts with him across any distance.

*August,* I called through our link. *I need you.*

There was a moment of silence, then I felt his presence in my mind. But instead of the warm connection I expected, I felt a cold wall slamming down between us.

*What is it, Anastasia?* His mental voice was clipped, annoyed.

I projected an image of Demi, of the Moon Goddess's Tear gleaming at her throat, of Sasha cowering beside me.

*She's wearing the sacred Luna artifact. She's claiming to be your chosen mate. What is going on?*

I waited for his outrage, for his immediate denial, for him to rush to my side. Instead, I felt his displeasure pulsing through our bond.

*Don't make a scene, Anastasia,* he replied, his mental voice cold. *Demi is sensitive. Let her have the villa. You can stay in the guest quarters.*

The betrayal hit me like a physical blow. I staggered back, my hand flying to my chest where our mate bond burned like acid.

*August, she's wearing the Moon Goddess's Tear,* I insisted.

*I know,* he replied, and the casual dismissal in his tone shattered something inside me. *I gave it to her. She deserves it more than you do right now.*

The mind-link went silent, leaving me standing there, frozen in shock and pain.

The rain started just as they lowered the former Alpha into the ground. I stood beside my husband, Alpha Trenton Stone, my head bowed in what everyone assumed was grief. The black veil over my face hid more than tears—it hid the careful blankness I'd perfected over three years of this marriage. Around us, the Greystone Pack mourned their fallen leader with howls that cut through the October wind. I didn't howl. I couldn't. The wolfless Luna never could. That's what they whispered, anyway. I caught the words drifting from the cluster of she-wolves near the oak tree: "Such a waste of space." "Poor Alpha Trenton, stuck with a dud." "At least she's pretty to look at." I'd heard worse. I'd learned to let it slide off me like water off glass.

The Sterling Pack territory stretched below me as my car wound up the mountain road toward home. Through the open window, pine and wildflowers mingled with the familiar scent markers of pack boundaries—our boundaries. The boundaries my research had helped secure and expand over the past five years. I'd cut my conference short by a day. Something had been pulling at me, an uneasiness that my wolf, Sarah, couldn't explain but insisted I address. 'Home,' she'd whispered in my mind for hours. 'We need to go home.' As I pulled into the driveway of the pack house, I noticed Marcus's SUV parked haphazardly near the entrance. Strange. He was supposed to be overseeing border patrols today. I checked my watch—2:17 PM.

The scent of herbs and antiseptic filled my nostrils as I organized the new lab reagents for our pack Healer. It was mindless work, but I welcomed the distraction. My wolf, Emma, had been restless all morning, pacing anxiously in my mind. As a late bloomer who'd only discovered her three months ago, we were still learning to communicate properly. "Something's wrong," she whispered in my thoughts. "I can feel it." I pushed her concern aside, focusing on alphabetizing the tincture bottles. Cameron had been distant lately—more so than usual—but I'd grown accustomed to the cold silences, the dismissive glances. Four years of loving someone who increasingly seemed to despise me had taught me to lower my expectations. "Madison, could you grab the inventory list from Beta Cameron's office?" the Healer called from the storage room. "I need to check if the wolfsbane shipment arrived." I nodded, setting down the glass vials carefully before making my way to Cameron's office.

The candles had burned down to stubborn nubs of wax, pooling onto the white linen tablecloth I had ironed myself. Across from me, the chair remained empty. The prime rib, seasoned with the rosemary I’d grown in the pack garden, was cold and gray. Three years. Today marked the third anniversary of the day Alpha Brody Watkins marked me, binding my soul to his in front of the Moon Goddess and the Silverclaw Pack. It was supposed to be a celebration. Instead, it was a wake for a marriage that had died long ago. My phone buzzed against the mahogany table, the vibration harsh in the silence of the dining room. My heart stuttered, a foolish flicker of hope rising in my chest. Maybe he was just late.

The infirmary smelled like antiseptic and something sweeter—lavender, maybe, meant to calm nervous wolves before their pre-ceremony assessments. It didn't work. My hands trembled as I rolled down the sleeve of my shirt, watching Dr. Callahan label the vial of my blood with practiced efficiency. "All done, Amelia," she said, offering a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. She'd been the pack physician for twenty years and had seen enough Omegas like me to know better than to waste genuine warmth. "Results will be ready in an hour. You can get dressed." I nodded, slipping behind the privacy screen. Through the gap in the curtain, I caught movement—Juliet, my foster sister, practically materializing in the doorway with that innocent smile she wore like a weapon. "Dr.
