My Fiancé Called Her “Bro” Until I Exposed Their Affair Novel Cover

My Fiancé Called Her “Bro” Until I Exposed Their Affair

Damon Carter’s penthouse, twenty-three stories above the glittering Hudson, is a shrine to his ego—cold steel, polished glass, and a view meant to impress. I’m at his side in midnight blue silk, his hand at my back a practiced performance. He assumes I’m blind to the truth. But I know exactly who she is, and I’ve worn this mask long enough. Tonight, I expose their affair, and the fallout will crack more than his perfect facade—it will bring everything crashing down.

Chapter 4

I wake up to sixty-two notifications. All Instagram. I don't open the app. I make coffee first. French press. Dark roast. Same routine. Control what you can control.

Diana texts at 7:15 AM: *Have you seen Violeta's stories?*

I haven't. I tell her that.

*Don't look yet. Call me first.*

I call. She answers on the first ring.

"She's playing victim," Diana says. No greeting. "Full performance. Tears. The works."

"What's she saying?"

"That you broke into Damon's house. That you're obsessed. That you can't handle him having female friends. She's not mentioning the robe. Or the bed. Just that you 'violently destroyed property' because you're jealous."

I sip my coffee. It's good. Strong. "And people believe her?"

"Some do. Marcus Webb posted a side-by-side of your photo and her story with the caption 'These are the same event' and about forty skull emojis. But yeah, some people are buying it. Damon's backing her up. He's telling everyone you broke in."

"I had a key."

"I know that. You know that. But he's saying you showed up uninvited in the middle of the night."

I think about this. The key is documented. Damon gave it to me in front of witnesses at a restaurant in SoHo. Four months ago. I have the receipt. I have the text he sent afterward: *Use it whenever. Mi casa es su casa.*

I could post that right now. Destroy his entire narrative in one screenshot.

I don't.

"Let them build it," I say.

Diana's quiet for a moment. "You're sure?"

"The higher they build it, the further it falls."

She exhales. "You're playing a long game."

"I'm playing the only game that matters."

"Okay. But Halle—" She pauses. "Some people are going to believe them. At least for a while. You okay with that?"

I look out at the city. Morning light on glass towers. People starting their days. None of them thinking about me.

"I'm fine," I say. "Let them talk."

---

I spend the morning at a gallery opening in Chelsea. Small space. Emerging artist. The work is good. Abstract paintings. Bold colors. I buy two pieces. The artist is young. Maybe twenty-five. She keeps thanking me. I tell her the work speaks for itself.

People stare. I feel it. Whispers behind hands. Phones angled toward me. I don't react. I look at the art. I talk to the artist. I smile when it's appropriate.

Marcus Webb shows up at noon. He walks straight to me. Leans in close.

"You're either the calmest person I've ever met or you're completely insane," he says.

"Maybe both."

He laughs. "Damon's losing his mind. He's been texting the group chat all morning. Violeta too. They're trying really hard to make you look crazy."

"Are they succeeding?"

"With some people. But that robe photo is a problem for them. The monogram is right there. Clear as day. Hard to explain why your 'bro' is wearing your fiancée's custom robe in your bed if nothing's going on."

I nod. Sip my champagne. "What's the split?"

"In the group? Maybe sixty-forty. Sixty percent think Damon's full of shit. Forty percent think you're unhinged. But the forty percent are loud."

"Let them be loud."

Marcus studies me. "You're not going to defend yourself?"

"Not yet."

"Why not?"

"Because defense looks like guilt. I don't need to defend myself. I need them to keep talking."

He grins. "You're scary."

"I'm patient."

"Same thing."

---

I meet Diana for lunch at a bistro in the West Village. Outdoor seating. It's cold but I don't mind. She's already ordered. Salads. Sparkling water.

"You look good," she says when I sit down.

"Thank you."

"I mean it. You look unbothered. It's driving them crazy."

"Good."

She leans forward. "I have something for you."

She slides a folder across the table. Plain manila. No label. I open it.

Inside are printed financial documents. Contract summaries. Dependency charts. I recognize the Carter Enterprises logo on half the pages.

"What is this?" I ask.

"Your father's office pulled it together. Quietly. I didn't ask how."

I flip through the pages. Three major development projects. All Carter-led. All dependent on Edwards-adjacent financial structures. Credit lines. Partnership agreements. Guarantees.

Without Edwards backing, these projects collapse. Without these projects, Carter Enterprises loses forty percent of its operational revenue.

"They're tethered," I say quietly.

"Completely. Your family could pull the floor out from under them in a week. Maybe less."

I close the folder. Look at Diana. "Did my father send this?"

"He said to tell you: 'When you're ready.'"

I nod slowly. My father doesn't interfere. He equips. He trusts me to know when to use what he gives me.

I'm not ready yet.

But I will be.

"Thank you," I say.

Diana reaches across the table. Squeezes my hand. "You're sure about this? Once you start pulling financial threads, it gets ugly fast."

"It's already ugly."

"It gets permanent."

I meet her eyes. "I know."

She nods. Lets go of my hand. We eat our salads in silence.

---

That evening, I file the folder in my apartment. I label it simply: *When.*

Then I pour myself a glass of wine. Stand on my balcony. Watch the city light up as the sun goes down.

My phone buzzes. Damon. Again. I silence it without reading.

Somewhere across the city, he's panicking. Violeta too. They're building their narrative higher and higher. Victim and defender. Jealous ex-fiancée. Innocent friends.

Let them build.

I take a sip of wine. It's good. French. My mother's favorite.

The city hums below me. Indifferent. Beautiful.

I'm not angry. I'm not scared.

I'm just waiting.

And when the time comes, I'll show them exactly what happens when you underestimate someone who's been counting exits since the day she walked in.
