Chapter 3

The alliance discussions stretched through the afternoon like a slow-burning fuse.

We sat in Grandfather's study—Harrison across from me, Ethan Cole standing near the window with a tablet, Grandfather at the head of the table. My journal lay open between us. Harrison had been reading for twenty minutes without speaking. His expression hadn't changed once.

Then he reached the Ford pack movement logs.

His jaw tightened. Just once. Briefly. Like something had clicked into place.

He turned the page, read another entry, then looked up at me. "The Ford supply routes," he said. "They don't match standard patrol coverage."

"No," I agreed. "They overlap Silvercrest's mineral deposits. Three separate routes, all within striking distance."

"For how long?"

"Four years," I said. "Starting six months after the rogue attack."

Harrison's eyes narrowed slightly. "The attack where Declan took a silver blade for you."

I nodded.

He looked at Grandfather. "Arthur. Did the Fords ever approach you about territorial concessions during that period?"

Grandfather's expression was grim. "Twice. Both times framed as 'gratitude offerings' for Ironveil's protection of my granddaughter. They wanted access to the eastern ridge."

"The mineral deposits," Harrison said quietly.

"Yes."

Harrison closed the journal with deliberate care. He didn't slam it. He set it down like it was evidence in a trial. "This isn't opportunism," he said. "This is a coordinated extortion pattern. Stage the attack. Manufacture the debt. Apply pressure through the bond. Extract concessions."

My wolf stirred weakly. Hearing it said aloud made it real in a way it hadn't been before.

Ethan stepped forward from the window. "I'll need to document this. Dates, coordinates, witness statements if available."

"Maria," I said. "The Omega housekeeper at Ironveil. She saw the wolfsbane draughts. She knows how long I was taking them."

Harrison's gaze sharpened on me. "Wolfsbane draughts."

I pressed my fingers to my mark-site. The cold was still there. "To sleep through the bond-pain. Five years."

Silence.

Ethan's stylus paused over the tablet. Grandfather looked away. Harrison didn't move.

"We'll need her testimony," Harrison said finally. His voice was very level. "If she's willing."

"She will be," I said.

Harrison nodded once. Then he stood, walked to the window, and looked out at the training grounds. His posture was controlled, but I could see the tension in his shoulders.

"Declan isn't going to let this go," he said.

Grandfather leaned back in his chair. "No. He won't."

"He'll come for her."

"Yes."

Harrison turned. His eyes met mine. "Do you want protection, or do you want resolution?"

I didn't hesitate. "Resolution."

Something shifted in his expression. Not quite approval. More like recognition. "Good. Then we document everything, present it to the Lycan Council, and let the institutional weight do what pack justice can't."

Ethan made a note on the tablet. "I'll start the formal filing tonight."

Harrison nodded. Then he looked at me again. "You've been carrying this for five years. Alone."

It wasn't a question.

"Yes," I said.

"Why?"

I looked at the journal on the table. At five years of careful notes, coordinates, dates. "Because I thought if I understood it, I could fix it. If I was patient enough. Good enough."

"And now?"

I met his eyes. "Now I know I was never the problem."

Harrison held my gaze for a long moment. Then he inclined his head slightly—acknowledgment, not pity.

"No," he said quietly. "You weren't."

---

That evening, the patrol wolf arrived at the gate just as we were finishing dinner.

Grandfather answered the door. I heard the formal greeting, the rustle of parchment changing hands. When he returned to the dining room, his expression was carefully neutral.

He set the message on the table between Harrison and me.

I unfolded it. The handwriting was Declan's—sharp, precise, no wasted ink.

*Cameron Bradley is to return to Ironveil territory within 48 hours. Failure to comply will result in rogue status under residual bond claim. —Alpha Declan, Ironveil Pack*

I read it twice. My wolf went very still inside me.

Harrison leaned forward and read over my shoulder. His scent—cold pine and winter air—was steady. Calm.

"Residual bond claim," he said. "That's not legally enforceable after a formal rejection."

"He knows that," Grandfather said. "He's testing."

"Testing what?"

"Whether she'll come back."

I set the message down. My hands were steady. "I won't."

Harrison looked at me. "Do you want to respond?"

I picked up the pen from the table. Turned the parchment over. Wrote four words on the back in clear, deliberate script.

*The bond is severed.*

I folded it once and stood. "I'll deliver it myself."

Grandfather started to rise. "Cameron—"

"I'll be fine," I said. "He needs to see my face when I hand it back."

Harrison stood as well. He didn't argue. He just nodded once and followed me to the door.

The patrol wolf was waiting at the gate. Young. Nervous. He took the folded parchment from my hand without meeting my eyes.

"Tell Alpha Declan," I said quietly, "that I'm not coming back. Not in 48 hours. Not ever."

The wolf nodded quickly and shifted. He disappeared into the trees at a run.

I stood at the gate and watched him go. My mark-site was cold. Hollow. But my hands were steady.

Behind me, Harrison's voice was low. "He'll escalate."

"I know," I said.

"Are you ready for that?"

I turned. Harrison was watching me with that steady, measuring gaze. No judgment. Just assessment.

"I've been ready for five years," I said. "I just didn't know it yet."

He held my gaze for a moment. Then he inclined his head slightly.

"Good," he said.

We walked back to the house in silence. My wolf was quiet. Watchful.

Waiting.
