Chapter 5

They placed me in the south tower, but I didn't sleep. Even through thick stone walls and heavy oak doors, the scent of cedar and mountain air kept me awake, sharp and electric against my skin.

From my window, I watched Prince Kael cross the courtyard toward the royal wing. His cape cut through the morning mist, straight and purposeful, heading toward the private study of the Lycan King.

Later, I learned what passed between them in that room. Kael had laid my brass-rimmed lockbox on his father’s desk. He laid out the facts without emotion, speaking like the Council authority he was trained to be: five years of systematic wolfsbane poisoning, an Alpha-tone command that forced a violent paralysis, and an eight-week pup bled out across cold basement stones.

The King had listened in total silence, his silver-bearded jaw tight as stone. But when Kael described who had brought the box—an infant girl found abandoned on the border eighteen years ago, a girl whose wolf had never surfaced—the Lycan King stopped breathing.

"Her scent," the King said, his voice dropping to a gravelly rasp. "Tell me what she smells like."

"White roses," Kael answered. "And winter frost. Underneath the poison, it’s unmistakable."

The King stood up so fast his heavy chair screeched against the slate floor. He walked to the window, his back turned to his son, his broad shoulders rising and falling in harsh, shuddering breaths. For a full minute, he said nothing. When he finally turned around, his weathered hands were gripping his signet ring so tightly his knuckles were bloodless.

"Grant the tribunal immediately," the King ordered, his voice raw. "Double the guard outside her quarters. If a single hair on her head is touched, I will burn Thornveil to ash."

The Ashford courier reached Thornveil territory twenty-four hours later.

The pack house was still littered with empty champagne bottles and crushed party streamers from the banquet. Dawson had spent the weekend parading Ellie before the elders, basking in the glow of his newly announced Silverfang alliance. When the black-uniformed Council rider shoved the wax-sealed summons into his chest, Dawson didn't cower.

He laughed.

He tore open the parchment in the grand foyer, Ellie leaning over his shoulder with her fingers resting possessively on his collar. He skimmed the charges—*Bond Violation, Unlawful Chemical Suppression, Grievous Harm*—and tossed the paper onto the side table like junk mail.

"Valerie went crying to the northern border," Dawson scoffed, kissing Ellie’s temple. "A wolfless foundling trying to invoke high court accords. It’s an embarrassment."

"Can they actually force you to go?" Ellie asked, her fingers drifting to her belly where his seed grew.

"It's a bureaucratic formality," Dawson said smoothly, flashing that familiar, arrogant smirk. "The Council is obligated to hear petitions, that’s all. We bring your ultrasound. We show them the Silverfang pact. I’ll tell them Valerie had an unstable fever and the wolfsbane was prescribed by our healer to keep her alive. Once they see she’s just a barren, hysterical Omega, they’ll dismiss it in ten minutes."

Ellie smiled, leaning into his side. "And then?"

"And then I formally reject her before the elders," he purred, "and take you as my Luna."

Two days later, Dawson arrived at the Ashford estate.

He didn't come alone. He brought a full motorcade, accompanied by Ellie, Beta Rowan, and his Gamma. He walked through the iron gates with his head held high, his leather jacket open, wearing the easy confidence of a man who believed the world was built to bend to his will.

He didn't wait for the tribunal to begin.

Before noon, Dawson slipped away from his escorts, bringing Ellie straight toward the infirmary wing where the guards had registered my arrival. He thought he could corner me. He thought one look at Ellie’s stomach, one heavy dose of his Alpha aura, would make me fold like I had for five long years.

I was sitting by the back window when the wooden door flew open.

Dawson stepped into the room, Ellie clinging to his arm. He didn't look at my face. He didn't look at my bruised neck. He slipped an ultrasound photo from his pocket and held it out between two fingers, his lips curved into a patronizing smile.

"Pack your things, Valerie," Dawson said, his voice dropping into that smooth, condescending baritone. "You’ve made a fool of yourself, but I’m feeling generous. You sign a statement saying this was an emotional breakdown, and I won't have you thrown out as a rogue. Think about the pack. Think about an innocent child."

I didn't answer. I didn't even flinch.

Dawson’s smile hardened. Irritation flashed behind his eyes. He took a heavy step toward my cot, his chest puffing out as he unleashed the thick, suffocating weight of his Alpha aura.

"I gave you an order," he barked, his eyes flashing crimson with command. **"Submit."**

The heavy linen curtains along the far wall snapped open.

Two Ashford Lycan enforcers stepped into the light.

They stood over seven feet tall, broad as iron doors, clad in black battle gear marked with the King's silver crest. The aura that rolled off them didn't just push back against Dawson's voice—it obliterated it, shattering his Alpha pressure like cheap glass. The room grew freezing cold, heavy with a dominance so ancient it made the floorboards hum beneath our feet.

Dawson recoiled, his boots skidding back a half-inch on the stones. His crimson eyes flickered out, snapping back to dull brown.

The lead enforcer didn't blink. He reached inside his vest, pulled out a thick parchment wrapped in black iron wire, and drove it hard into the center of Dawson's chest.

"Alpha Dawson of Thornveil," the enforcer boomed, his voice shaking the glass in the windows. "By sovereign order of the Ashford Lycan Council, you are formally arrested. Your Alpha title is suspended. Step forward for trial."

Dawson gripped the iron-bound scroll, his face draining of color.

Behind him, Ellie let out a small, terrified gasp.

For the first time in his life, Dawson’s easy smile cracked, peeled away, and completely died.
