Chapter 1

The King’s health has been fragile, and producing an heir has proven difficult. So, my childhood friend, Rome Mason, was adopted as the Lycan Prince.

Before I entered the King’s den, Rome stood before me, his aura sharp and commanding, his gaze arrogant and dismissive. “Things are different now,” he said, his voice laced with condescension, the Alpha tone cutting through the air. “With your family’s standing, you’ll only ever be a chosen mate at best.”

I placed a hand on my still-flat stomach, my eyes lowered, saying nothing. A month ago, at a pack gathering, I had mistakenly drunk a cup of spiked wine and found myself in the arms of the Lycan King. His scent—deep and primal, like pine and storm—had enveloped me, and now, I was carrying his child. Soon, I would be entering the King’s den as his mate.

---

After Rome was named the Lycan Prince, the Mason household, once quiet and unassuming, was now flooded with visitors offering congratulations. When I went to pay my respects, I didn’t even make it past the gate before being turned away by Grace Gutierrez, a senior Omega in the Blue Pack.

She stood there, her hair perfectly styled, her scent faintly floral but laced with disdain. “The Prince is occupied with important matters and has no time for outsiders,” she said, her tone sharp, her aura prickling with superiority.

Outsiders.

The word lingered in my mind as I lowered my gaze. I had known Rome for ten years, grown up with him, shared countless memories. And now, I was an outsider.

Everyone knew how far he had risen. Packs that once scorned him for his rogue lineage were now rushing to form alliances with him. And he, it seemed, had outgrown me too.

But I was used to it. I had learned to hold back my tears, to maintain my composure. From my pocket, I pulled out a small, intricately carved box and handed it to her, my voice calm and polite. “Grace, I’ve come to offer my congratulations. Please give this to the Prince.”

She took it carelessly, her scent flickering with irritation. “I’ll pass it along, but whether he accepts it or not is up to him.”

I nodded, turned, and walked away. Inside the box was a pendant—a gift from Rome’s mother before she passed. She and my mother had been close, and they had often joked about Rome and I one day becoming mates. But now, the pendant had been returned. And with it, any lingering ties between us were severed.

The smell of bleach stung my cracked hands as I scrubbed the pack house floors. Five years. One thousand eight hundred and twenty-five days of waiting, and today was finally the day. My fingers were raw, bleeding slightly as I applied more pressure to a stubborn stain. "Just like your father," Mother's voice sliced through the morning air. "A curse upon this family." I didn't look up. "I'm almost finished, Mother." "See that you are. Today is important. We must impress the Alpha when he arrives." My heart fluttered at the thought. Ace Harris.

The morning of my eighteenth birthday arrived with the same gray drizzle that had been falling for three days straight. I pressed my face against the cool window of our small cottage, watching droplets race down the glass like tears I refused to shed. Today was supposed to be different. Today was supposed to change everything. "Happy birthday, sweetheart." Dad's voice carried from the kitchen, rough with the chronic pain that never seemed to leave him anymore. I turned to find him leaning heavily against the doorframe, his left shoulder—the one that never healed properly after saving Alpha Axel—hanging at that familiar awkward angle. "Thanks, Dad." I managed a smile, though my stomach churned with anticipation and dread in equal measure. Eighteen. The age when every werewolf's inner wolf was supposed to emerge, when the transformation that defined our very existence should finally claim me. But as the hours crawled by, nothing happened.

I stood before the full-length mirror in my chamber, fingers trembling as I smoothed down the ceremonial white dress that hugged my curves. Tomorrow would be my marking ceremony with Marcus—the day my fated mate would officially claim me before the entire Moonstone Pack. The thought sent butterflies dancing through my stomach. "You look perfect, Sophia," my mother Elara said, her critical eyes scanning me from head to toe. There was no warmth in her assessment, only calculation. "Remember, the daughter of a Delta warrior rarely secures a Beta as her mate. Don't ruin this opportunity." I nodded obediently, swallowing the familiar ache her words always left. To her, my mating was never about love—only status. "Yes, Mother." *She doesn't understand what we have with Marcus,* Lyra, my wolf, whispered in my mind. My beautiful white wolf with silver-tipped fur had always been my true companion, awakening when I was just twelve—earlier than most.

Rain drummed against the windows of my healing center that afternoon, creating a rhythm I'd always found soothing. I was Carmen George, a memory healer who'd built a quiet life here in Seattle territory, and right now I was exactly where I wanted to be—organizing patient files with Wade's arms wrapped around me from behind. "You're humming again," he murmured against my ear, his breath warm. "That old lullaby." I smiled, leaning back into his chest. "You taught it to me when we were kids, remember?" "How could I forget?" His voice carried that gentle warmth I'd fallen in love with two years ago, when I'd found him wandering as an amnesiac rogue. We'd discovered we were fated mates, completed our mating ceremony, and every day since had felt like a gift. The mate bond hummed contentedly between us, a golden thread of connection that made my wolf purr. Then the doors exploded inward. I jerked away from Wade as wood splintered and rain gusted into the clinic. A woman strode through the wreckage, flanked by warriors whose eyes glowed with barely contained wolf energy.

I stared at the plastic stick in my trembling hands, watching as the second pink line darkened against the white background. Positive. I was pregnant with Wilder's pup. My knees nearly buckled beneath me as I sank down onto the cool marble floor of Wilder's private bathroom. The morning light streamed through the high windows, casting golden patterns across the tiles. I pressed a hand to my still-flat stomach, hardly daring to believe it. "A pup," I whispered, my voice barely audible even to my own ears. "Our pup." After everything we'd been through—after finding him half-dead in that underground fighting pit, after trading my family's silver heirlooms to the Rogue King for his freedom, after taking that poisoned silver blade meant for him during the territorial challenge—this was finally proof that our bond was real. Stronger than any "fated" claim. I closed my eyes, remembering the whispers that had been spreading through the pack since Kaylee's return.
