Chapter 1

I stared at the small velvet box in Jake's outstretched hand, my heart fluttering with anticipation. After three years together, this was our first celebration of my shift anniversary—a milestone that marked one year since my wolf had finally awakened. Though she had emerged later than most, the connection had been worth the wait.

"Open it," Jake urged, his lips curving into what I once thought was an endearing smile.

My fingers trembled slightly as I lifted the lid. Inside lay a thin silver chain, the kind sold in bulk at the pack's general store. No charm, no engraving, nothing that suggested any thought beyond a last-minute purchase.

*Is that it?* My wolf whimpered in disappointment. *After everything we've done for him?*

I silenced her quickly. Jake worked hard as a mid-ranking warrior. We lived modestly in our small cabin on the edge of the territory—a place befitting my supposed Omega status. I couldn't expect lavish gifts.

"It's beautiful," I lied, forcing warmth into my voice. "Thank you."

Jake nodded, seemingly satisfied with my response but showing none of the nervousness or excitement I'd hoped for. He pocketed the box before I could even try it on.

"I figured you'd need something nice for the Mate Ceremony," he said casually. "Speaking of which, we should start packing. The Moonstone Pack is expecting us by tomorrow evening."

My heart skipped. The annual Mate Ceremony at the prestigious Moonstone Pack was where countless wolves found their fated partners or formalized their bonds. I'd dreamed of attending with Jake, hoping that perhaps there, under the ceremonial moon, we might finally feel the mate pull that had eluded us.

"You really got us invitations?" I asked, unable to hide my excitement.

"Of course." He shrugged as if it were nothing. "I have connections."

I bit my lip to hide my smile. If only he knew the truth—that my father, the Lycan King, could have secured us the most honored positions at any ceremony across all territories. But I'd chosen this life, this anonymity, to find love untainted by power or obligation.

The next morning, I hummed softly while preparing breakfast, arranging wild berries in a pattern around the edges of Jake's plate—a small touch he never seemed to notice. My thoughts drifted to the ceremony, to the possibility that perhaps Jake and I were meant to be mates after all, and we just needed the blessing of the Moon Goddess to confirm it.

"By the way," Jake said, interrupting my daydream as he entered the kitchen, "Madison's coming with us."

The wooden spoon I'd been holding clattered against the counter. "Madison? Your... pack sister?"

"Yeah." He grabbed a piece of toast, not meeting my eyes. "She's had a rough time since her rejection. Needs to get away, you know?"

Madison Walsh. The she-wolf who always seemed to be around Jake, touching his arm, whispering in his ear. The one who looked at me with barely concealed disdain.

"But... this was supposed to be our trip," I said carefully, trying to keep the hurt from my voice. "For my shift anniversary."

Jake's expression hardened slightly. "Don't tell me you're jealous. She's like family, Emma. Her mate rejected her publicly. Do you have any idea what that does to a wolf?"

I did, actually. The royal courts were full of such painful stories. But I kept that knowledge buried deep, along with my true identity.

"I'm not jealous," I said softly. "I just thought..."

"Thought what? That I'd abandon a pack sister in need?" He stepped closer, his aura pressing against mine—not enough to hurt, but enough to remind me of my place. "That's not what pack means, Emma."

My cheeks burned with shame and hurt, but I nodded. "You're right. I'm sorry."

His expression softened immediately, and he pressed a quick kiss to my forehead. "That's my girl. Now finish packing. We leave in an hour."

As the sun began to set, we loaded our bags into Jake's truck. Madison was already waiting for us, her long blonde hair cascading over her shoulders, her outfit clearly chosen to accentuate every curve. She barely acknowledged me with a nod before climbing into the front passenger seat—my seat.

I slid into the back without complaint, watching the crescent moon rise as we drove toward Moonstone territory. Suddenly, a scent drifted through the open window—night-blooming jasmine mixed with rain. My wolf stirred restlessly, her attention snapping to full alert.

*That smell,* she whispered. *It's important.*

My heart raced inexplicably, and I found myself scanning the darkening forest that lined the road, searching for... something. Someone.

"You okay back there?" Jake called, his eyes meeting mine briefly in the rearview mirror.

"Fine," I murmured, trying to ignore the strange longing that had settled in my chest. "Just nervous about the ceremony."

But as we continued our journey, I couldn't shake the feeling that something significant awaited me at the Moonstone Pack—something that had nothing to do with Jake or the silver chain tucked away in his pocket.
