Chapter 2

Freya’s POV

With the rumors I had heard about him, and how his late father, the former Alpha of the Shadow pack terrorized all neighboring packs, I knew I was going to die.

There was no way I could escape from the most dangerous Alpha that I had ever heard of.

Alpha Damien moved like death itself, silent, fast, merciless. A monster that everyone feared.

Blood splattered onto the ground as he tore the throat of another rogue.

The last one turned to run but Damien caught him in two steps. A snap echoed through the forest, and the Rogue crumpled lifelessly to the ground.

And then, it was just him and me. I had forgotten I was supposed to run away before he got to where I was but I was still standing. Something had held me back and I couldn’t even figure it out.

I couldn’t breathe. My body shook as his glowing red eyes locked onto mine.

I had grown up to know Rogues were monsters. But then, the man that stood before me? He was something worse.

He growled again as he walked closer to me, his hands stained with blood.

Just a few steps away from me, his glowing red eyes started to fade away.

I was scared, deliberating if I should run away. My strength was nothing compared to that of an Alpha, he would catch me if I flinch.

The moment he held my wrist, I closed my eyes, waiting to be struck by his claws. But, a deep growl rumbled from his chest, and this time wasn’t out of rage. It was calm and seemed like he was trying to fight something within himself.

My wolf stirred inside of me, she was restless and confused.

“You are mine,” he gasped.

His words sent a cold shiver down my spine. No way! I only just escaped from one nightmare and now I am going into another.

He was going to take me back to the Shadow Pack, the same home where my mother and I were rejected.

I couldn’t breathe, everything was happening so fast.

Then my mind drifted back to his words. Mine? What did he mean?

The word echoed in my mind, twisting like a knife. He wasn’t just taking me as captive, he just indicated that I was his mate.

That was impossible, I didn’t want to return to the Shadow Pack, not even the thought to be his mate was in my mind.

I was too weak to feel the mate bond, if truly he was right about what he said. And contrary, I was also sure he wouldn’t accept the mate bond. He won’t accept such a weak wolf as his mate.

I took a step back to run, but my body was too weak. My wolf screamed at me to try and escape, but my legs wouldn’t move.

Why was he taking so much time? I thought by now I would already be dead.

Damien didn’t speak again, he didn’t make a step closer either. But I could feel his presence wrapping around me, heavy and inescapable.

He finally came closer, held my wrist and pulled me closer, till I was just an inch away from him. His other hand curled around my waist, his eyes locked in mine.

How was this going to end? I couldn’t tell which I wanted now, but I knew my destiny was at his hands at that moment and I had to wait for his decision.

Finally, my wolf managed to stir inside of me, “He is your mate.”

I shook my head, hesitant, also trying to break free. But the Alpha’s grip was hard.

The sacred healing springs shimmered in the pale dawn light as I knelt before them, my knees aching against the smooth stones. Steam rose from the crystal-clear waters, carrying the scent of minerals and ancient magic that had blessed countless generations of the Sterling Moon Pack. This was my twenty-seventh fertility ritual in five years – I'd counted every single one. "Please, Moon Goddess," I whispered, my voice breaking as I sprinkled the mixture of herbs Healer Elara had prepared into the bubbling spring. "Grant me the strength to bear an heir for the Sterling Pack." My wolf, Luna, whimpered inside me, exhausted from years of these rituals. *We've tried so hard*, she mourned. *So many moons, so many prayers.* I felt the weight of disapproving gazes boring into my back. Elder Margaret's scent – pine needles tinged with disappointment – was unmistakable, as was the cold vanilla and cedar that belonged to my mother-in-law, the former Luna. They'd come to observe, as they always did, their silent judgment more painful than any words. "The water must fully absorb the essence," Elder Margaret instructed, her voice clipped.

The scent of blood—my blood—had dried into my uniform as I raced through the forest before dawn. My wolf, Silver, was restless beneath my skin, her instincts sharp as we tracked the movements of the Red Claw Pack along our eastern border. They'd been encroaching for weeks, testing our defenses, looking for weakness. "They're planning to move tonight," I whispered to Silver as I crouched behind a fallen oak, watching their scouts marking trees barely fifty yards into what should be our territory. "Three units, coming from the ravine." *We should attack now,* Silver urged, her voice a low growl in my mind. *While they're scattered.* I shook my head, forcing my breathing to steady despite the adrenaline coursing through me. "We need the pack. We'll report back." The Red Claw scout lifted his head suddenly, scenting the air. I froze, pressing my body against the damp earth. Too late.

The late afternoon sun filtered through the heavy curtains of my private study, casting long shadows across the mahogany desk where pack correspondence lay forgotten. I'd retreated here after the monthly Luna council meeting, seeking solace in the familiar scent of old leather and parchment. The pack house felt suffocating lately, every corner holding memories of happier times with Dean. A sharp knock interrupted my brooding. "Come in," I called, expecting Marcus with some administrative matter. Instead, Brooklynn slipped through the door, her usually perfect blonde hair slightly disheveled, her green eyes bright with something I couldn't quite identify. Excitement? Fear? She closed the door behind her with deliberate care, the soft click echoing in the sudden silence. "Maddie, we need to talk." Her voice carried an odd tremor, and she pressed her back against the door as if barricading us inside.

I had spent the entire day preparing for this moment. Our seventh mating anniversary. Seven years since Matthew had claimed me as his Luna, since I'd given up my career as an art restorer to stand by his side as Alpha of the Black Moon Pack. Seven years of sacrifice that I had believed would eventually be recognized, even cherished. The grand dining hall looked perfect—candles flickering in every corner, casting a warm glow over the white tablecloth and the fine china I'd polished myself. I'd cooked Matthew's favorite meal, the same one I'd prepared on our first anniversary, when hope still bloomed in my chest like a perennial flower that refused to die. My hands trembled slightly as I adjusted the silverware. The scars on my palms—evidence of countless small cruelties endured in this very packhouse—caught the candlelight. I tucked them under the table, out of sight. Tonight would be different.

The rain battered against the stone walls of the Pack House, echoing the hollow ache inside my chest. It had been exactly three years. Three years since the rogue attack that turned my life into a waking nightmare. Three years since I held the cold, tiny body of my daughter, Kiara, and screamed until my throat bled. Today, the pack was silent, respectful of the Alpha’s mourning—or so I thought. I clutched the small velvet box containing the only thing I had left of her: a silver locket. I wanted Bennett to go with me to the gravesite. As the Alpha and my Chosen Mate, he should have been by my side. But he wasn’t in his office, and he wasn’t in our bedroom. "Council meetings," he had told me this morning, his eyes failing to meet mine.
