Chapter 5

Several minutes later...

Roberto stepped out of the bathroom clad in a grey bathrobe, a small towel draped over his wet hair.

He badly needed that shower. His phone, which was placed on the bedside cabinet, started ringing, and he subconsciously made his way to fetch it. As soon as he saw the caller ID, he frowned and declined the call. However, the caller resumed calling almost immediately, prompting the scowl on his face to deepen even more.

He cut the call once more and threw the phone on the bed, flumping down on the side of the bed, a defeated sigh eventually escaping his lips. He hunched forward, resting his chin on the back of his right hand while staring into the void, lost in thought.

The phone beside him kept on vibrating, but he didn't bother to pick it up.

His mind thought back to Lily. Everything about her made him regret. If only there were a pill for regret, he would have taken an overdose, so as to right his wrongs, so he could have the happy family he dreamed of with Lily.

His spite for Miriam grew with each second. If she had never returned to the country, maybe he would still be married to Lily by now. His business wouldn't have ended up in a state where they needed the crumb-like favours from a company like Fawn Corporation, which he previously looked down on.

He huffed, straightening his upper body and then retrieved the still-vibrating phone. He answered the call, and then came the shrill voice of his wife.

"How dare you ignore my calls, Roberto? Why haven't you sent the money? Do you really want me to divorce you?"

Roberto didn't answer. Instead, he dropped the call and blocked her number. Then he dialled another number and waited for the recipient to answer.

Once the latter had done so, he spoke, his voice, though calm, full of hidden rage. "Vilson, I want you to prepare divorce papers. For me and Miriam. Pull every string you have to. Just make sure stacks of divorce papers are sent to my residence today."

"Sure thing, sir," the recipient replied before ending the call.

"Since you want to divorce me so much, I won't try to change your mind this time. I'll give you what you want, Miriam!" he spat through gritted teeth, his eyes laden with malice.

He stayed in the room for hours until he got a call. He rushed out and headed to the mansion gates to fetch the package.

Miriam, who had seen him rush outside earlier, didn't say a word. She kept her arms locked over her chest and had her jaws set in defiance.

Without a word to her, Roberto scaled up the stairs and headed to their matrimonial bedroom. He took out a document from the various copies in the package and went through it. The alimony should be enough to satisfy a greedy woman like her.

His phone rang in that moment, and he fished it out from his pocket. It was his wife calling. He immediately answered it.

"So when am I getting the ten million, honey?" Her tone wasn't harsh like previously.

"Come upstairs. I have something for you, dear," he told her, his voice calm as well.

"Sure thing, honey,"

The loud clatter of her footwear slapping against the stairs as she charged up them was heard, and soon, she entered the room without needing to open the door since it was already ajar.

Compared to her defiant, angry look before, she was now smiling.

"Hubby, I'm here." She announced sultrily, walking towards him in what she thought was an alluring way. "You said you have something for me, huh? If it's what I want, I promise, I'll let you between my thighs for a whole week, every day. We could even do it in your office, hubby," she said coquettishly, prompting him to frown in disgust.

He was even more disappointed in himself.

How... Just how had he stooped so low to pursue a woman of this calibre? How did she make him head over heels for her all these years?

"Here's what you seek," He pointed to the document lying on the coffee table.

She looked at him, puzzlement materialising on her features. "What is it?"

He forced a bitter smile. "Why don't you guess?"

"Oh, you know how bad I am at guesses, hubby." She pouted.

In the past, he would find this look cute, but now, he could only recoil in disgust.

"Just tell me," she pleaded, wanting to hold his hand and sway it.

"I bet there's a reason your eyes are still working, right? So use them properly, Miriam," he told her, his tone cold.

"Really? That's what we're doing now?" She asked with a raised brow.

He didn't answer her but instead placed his hands in his pockets. "It's up to you. Whenever you're done making good use of your eyes, find me. I'll be in the kitchen," with that, he emitted a scoff before walking out of the room, not even bothering to shut the door.

Miriam harrumphed in arrogance. "In the end, you'll always bend to my will, Roberto. I know how much you like to bonk. If I don't take advantage of it, how will I still be called Miriam? Cindy was right. Spreading my legs for him freely would only make me look cheap. By billing him, he'd know my worth even better. As for that gown... though it's not necessary, but I need the money. If I didn't lose that bet, I wouldn't be in this state. Sandra, you're lucky to win this time. You'll be getting a free 6 million from me. Anyways, I can always get back at you and claim thrice the amount I'll give you tonight."

Harrumphing once more, she made her way to the coffee table, helped herself to a chair and draped her left leg over the other. Then, she reached forward to pick up the document.

But upon seeing the title, her arrogance fled, replaced by a meld of confusion and disbelief.

"Divorce Agreement?!" She repeated the heading, still unable to register the reality. She rubbed her eyes, just to be sure her eyes weren't playing tricks on her.

But it was the same.

She flipped through the pages, and a frown materialised on her face.

"This man... How dare he think of divorcing me?" She seethed, teeth tightly clenched.  "I haven't filed for divorce, and he dared beat me to it with this paltry amount he calls alimony? What rubbish!"

She stalked out of the room with the document in hand, yelling her husband's name on repeat, but she got no response. With her right hand placed on the bannister, Miriam barreled down the stairs, her expression menacingly ugly.

She then stormed into the kitchen where Roberto was helping himself to a bowl of cereal and milk. Seeing his equable look made her rage spike.

"What is this?" she threw the papers on the kitchen table.

He took out a high-end pen from his shirt pocket and placed it on the document. "Sigh, it,"

Seeing his placid look, her disgruntlement mounted to heights, and her chest started rising and falling. "How dare you file for divorce?"

"That's what you wanted, right?" He responded before scooping another spoonful of the cereal. "You should be excited,"

"Excited? Are you nuts?" she fumed.

"Miriam, I've given you what you so desire. Yes, I'm a lazy, lying weakling, just as you said. So please do the honours and affix your signature in the required places. Your alimony is quite generous, so you don't need to worry about falling from the elite circle."

Upon hearing that, she pounded hard on the table, causing the spoon to fly out of the bowl, sputtering some of the meal on the table's surface.

"Miriam, don't make me lose my temper with you!" Roberto fumed, shooting up from his seat.
