Chapter 1

Kim's POV

I finally gave birth to my baby, but she was dead.

My hands felt ice-cold as I held that tiny, motionless body in my arms. She wasn’t crying. She wasn’t moving. Nothing.

I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. For a moment, I thought I was trapped in a nightmare I couldn’t wake from. Sweat clung to my skin, my body trembling from the hours of pushing.

Tears blurred my vision as I lifted my head to the nurse.

“Are you sure?” I whispered, my voice cracking. “Please… try. Maybe she’s just asleep. Pat her back, wake her…”

The nurse shook her head, eyes filled with pity. Her hands trembled as she spoke. “I’m sorry, Luna… she’s… she’s stillborn.”

“No!” My voice shattered the room. “PLEASE! JUST TRY! PLEASE!”

I shook the tiny body slowly, patting her back, willing her to move. But she didn’t.

The nurse bit her lip, struggling to hold back tears. “I’m so sorry, Luna.”

“No… this isn’t real. You’re lying!” I screamed, my whole body trembling, tears streaming down my face.

Alpha Don, my mate, had never loved me. We were mated by political duties. He barely looked at me. He didn’t care about me.

But the moment I became pregnant, something changed. He smiled at me. He held my hand. For the first time, he wanted something from me that wasn’t just duty. He wanted an heir. And I had dreamed that once I gave birth, he would finally love me.

Now, I held nothing. Only the cold, lifeless body of the child I had carried. The child I had nurtured in my womb for 9 months, anticipating the beautiful memories we would make as a family.

“Doctor… what’s taking so long?” I suddenly heard Don's voice from just outside the door.

Tears blurred my vision as I stared at the tiny, motionless body in my arms. “Please… please, nurse… save my baby, please.”

The nurse shook her head, her hands trembling. “I’m sorry, Luna…”

My body trembled violently. Don couldn’t see this. He'd be furious.

The door burst open. “Kimberly? What’s going on? I haven’t heard a thing!” His voice rang through the room as he stepped in.

I barely registered him coming closer. His brows were furrowed, eyes searching mine. “Kim… my sweet mate,” he said, touching my cheek. “You’ve been crying. The delivery must've hurt a lot…”

Then his gaze dropped to the baby. “Oh… is it a girl?”

I just stared at him.

He reached for me. “Stop crying, okay? Let me hold her.”

More tears fell. “It’s… It’s a stillborn,” I whispered.

Don froze. His hands stiffened mid-air. “What?”

“The baby… is not alive?” More tears rolled down my cheeks, dropping on my shaky hands.

“What the hell did you just say, Kim?” His voice cracked between rage and disbelief.

“The baby—”

Don ran a hand through his hair. His jaw was tight. His whole body radiating anger.

He looked at me. “Didn’t you eat properly?” he roared.

“I…did,” I trembled, my heart pounding in my chest.

“Didn’t you take your meds?”

I cried, my voice shaking.

“Didn’t you… exercise? You didn’t stress yourself. You did checkups! So how the fuck is the baby dead?” He slammed his hand against the bed.

I sobbed, gasping for air, wishing the floor would swallow me whole.

“You had one job, Kim,” he spat, voice filled with fury. “One job! All you had to do was give birth to the baby. Nothing else. And you couldn’t even do that.”

I flinched under the harshness of his words, staring at his face, burning with anger and disappointment.

“You’re pitiful. Your body couldn’t even serve as a temporary house for another person for 9 months? You’re pathetic,” he growled.

I buried my face in my hands, shaking, my chest heaving. “Don. Please… I’m in so much pain—”

“Gosh,” he growled loudly, “it’s worthless. The 9 months I spent showing you love were for nothing!”

The nurse lowered her head, despite her fear she managed to speak. “Alpha… the Luna needs emotional support. She’s… in too much pain—”

“Shut up,” he snapped. “You realize I fund this hospital, right? Keep your mouth shut if you don’t want to get fired.”

I buried my face in my hands, sobbing. This was him before I got pregnant. He was cruel, controlling, and indifferent. Nine months ago, I had dared to hope he actually loved me. Now, everything came crashing down.

He strode toward me, eyes burning, gaze falling on the baby. “You’re useless. A useless woman with a useless womb.”

My eyes widened. “DON!” I screamed, my voice breaking.

Don glared at me before angrily storming out and banging the door.

I was shaking, my hands still trembling. The nurse approached cautiously, her face pale. “I’m so sorry, Luna… please, you have to be strong.”

I barely heard her. All I could register were Don's harsh words echoing in my mind and the cruel reality of what had just happened.

The nurse’s voice pulled me back. “If you’re ready, Luna… we’ll have to take the baby to the morgue now.”

I clutched the tiny, lifeless body to my chest, unable to imagine the smile I would never see, the cries I would never hear, the little hands I would never hold. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I sat there, frozen, for what felt like hours.

Eventually, after about two torturous hours, they took her away. My heart felt hollow. They cleaned me up, and my handmaid Susan guided me outside toward the carriage.

Her grip on my arm was a bit too tight. “You’re hurting me, Susan,” I whispered.

“Oh… sorry, Luna,” she said, voice stiff, like it was more duty than sympathy. She had always seen me as weak. But now I knew she would see me as even less.

The polished, grand carriage waited, and there he was. Don, sitting inside with a dark expression on his face. Susan helped me in, but just as I was about to step inside, he spoke. “I was waiting for you.”

I froze. His gaze pinned me in place.

“Let me make it clear to you,” he said, voice cold as ice. “You are not fit to be my Luna. I reject any form of relationship with you.”
