Chapter 4

His knees hit the marble and the sound of it echoed in the suite like something breaking that couldn't be put back.

I didn't move. I didn't speak. I watched him kneel on the floor where my blood had been and I felt nothing that I recognized as feeling—just a kind of cold, clear observation, the way you watch ice form on a window. Methodical. Inevitable.

The infirmary was quieter. Maren had slipped out the moment he walked in, which was the right instinct. His wolf was audible even in human form—a low, continuous sound in his chest, not quite a growl, not quite a howl, something in between that had no human equivalent. It made the walls feel closer.

He talked for a long time.

The Luna title. The finest healers on the continent. Resources, territory, anything I needed, everything I had ever been denied. His voice was careful and sincere and devastatingly well-constructed, and I understood that this was what an Alpha sounded like when he was genuinely afraid—not of an enemy, but of a consequence. He had never faced a consequence before. It showed in the way he kept reaching for my eyes and finding nothing to hold onto.

Then came the explanation.

He needed to know, he said. He needed to know I loved him for himself—not for his title, not for his territory, not for the aura that made other wolves' knees buckle. He had watched too many Alphas bonded to mates who wanted the power, not the wolf. He couldn't risk that. He couldn't risk me being like that. So he had tested me. He had given me every reason to leave and waited to see if I stayed.

No mate, he said, had ever proven what I proved.

His voice broke on that last part. I think it was real. I think he genuinely believed every word he was saying.

I let him finish.

Then I said: 'You watched.'

He went still.

Not the kind of still that means you've been caught. The kind that means you're deciding which version of the truth is survivable. I watched him move through confusion—genuine, I thought—and then through something more careful, more calculated, a slight adjustment behind the eyes.

'Nicole—'

'At the pack event,' I said. 'When I was serving. Someone made me grovel.' I kept my voice level. 'You were there.'

He didn't answer. Which was its own answer.

I looked at him for a moment longer. Then I looked at the bandaging on my right hand—Maren's clean, precise work wrapped over fingers that still wouldn't fully straighten—and I said, very quietly, 'I need time. I need to think.'

He reached for my unbandaged hand. I let him hold it. I kept my face still and my wolf silent and I thought: remember this too. The exact weight of his hand. The exact sound of his breathing when he thought he was winning.

Remember all of it.

---

She arrived forty-eight hours later.

I was sitting up in the infirmary cot when the door opened and a she-wolf in a charcoal suit walked in like she owned the building and was mildly disappointed in its square footage. Sharp jaw, sharper eyes, leather case in one hand and a coffee thermos in the other that had clearly survived more than a few wars. She looked at me the way a mechanic looks at an engine—not unkindly, but without sentimentality.

'Nicole Lewis,' she said. Not a question. 'I'm Lia Hoffman. Sit still, I've seen the hand.'

She set the leather case on the chair beside my cot and opened it with the efficiency of someone who has done this ten thousand times. Maren's medical records were already in her hands—the photographs, the bloodwork, the wolfsbane panel with its careful notations.

She laid them out on the blanket in front of me like she was dealing cards.

'Long-term administration,' she said. 'Repeated. Months, minimum, possibly longer, starting before your exile and continuing through it.' She tapped the panel. 'This isn't environmental. This is deliberate. Documented.' A pause. 'Maren Cole is thorough. I appreciate thorough.'

I said nothing. I watched her work.

She walked me through the timeline without asking if I wanted to hear it—the exile, the suppression, the wolfsbane levels cross-referenced against the dates of my imprisonment. She laid it out with the flat precision of someone who has already decided what it means and is simply confirming that I can see it too.

Then she said: 'A Mate Contract sealed before pack elders and witnessed by the Moon Goddess is the only document in werewolf law that an Alpha title cannot override.' She reached into the case and pushed a single sheet across the blanket. 'One clause. Infidelity forfeits his Alpha title, his territory, and all pack holdings. To you. Irrevocably.' Her eyes met mine. 'Sign here. I'll handle the rest.'

I picked up the sheet.

I read every word. All of it—the legal language, the forfeiture terms, the elder witness requirements, the invocation of the Moon Goddess as binding authority. I read it twice. Lia waited without fidgeting, without filling the silence, which told me she was either very patient or very certain, and I suspected it was both.

When I finished, I looked up.

'He'll sign it,' I said.

Lia's mouth curved. Just slightly. 'I know he will.' She uncapped her pen and held it out. 'That's why I drafted it.'

I took the pen in my left hand—the undamaged one—and signed.

The ink dried. Lia capped the pen and slid the document back into the case with the careful satisfaction of someone filing something that has been a long time coming.

Outside the infirmary window, the morning was grey and very still. Somewhere down the corridor, I could hear the distant sound of Ezra's voice—low, authoritative, already making arrangements, already assuming the shape of a future he believed he had secured.

I looked at my bandaged hand.

I thought about the forfeiture clause. I thought about pack elders and the Moon Goddess and the single, irrevocable sentence I would one day speak before hundreds of wolves.

I thought: not yet.

But soon.
