The message from Carter arrived on a Wednesday.

I didn't see it directly. Dashiell told me about it that evening, standing in the doorway of the sitting room with the same stillness he brought to everything—unhurried, nothing wasted. He said Carter had sent a formal request to the King. A diplomatic summit. Territorial protocol. Dashiell's alleged deception.

I almost laughed.

Almost.

"What did the King say?" I asked.

"Nothing." Dashiell's voice was even. "I sent the reply."

One sentence. Aurelia is under Lycan Crown protection, and Carter's continued pursuit of her person or her records will be treated as aggression against the royal line.

I sat with that for a moment. The weight of it. The clean, absolute finality of it, the way it closed a door Carter had been trying to wedge open with his fingers.

"How did he take it?" I asked.

Dashiell said nothing. He didn't have to.

I thought about Carter in his pack house, that message in his hands, Yasmin's voice carrying through the ceiling above him. I thought about the particular quality of his silence when things didn't go the way he had planned—the way his jaw would tighten, the way he'd straighten his cuffs before he said anything.

I pressed two fingers to the scar on my neck. Fainter still. Going.

"Good," I said.

Three days later, Silas came.

I didn't know about it until after—Dashiell told me in the same quiet, factual way he told me everything, sitting across from me at the small table in the corridor sitting room while the afternoon light moved across the floor between us.

Four of them. Silas and three of Ironveil's best trackers. Not a retrieval. An intelligence run—locate me, map Silvercrest's defensive gaps, bring Carter something he could use.

They had made it to the inner boundary before the border patrol caught them. Twelve minutes, Dashiell said. That was how long it took.

He had gone himself.

"You didn't have to do that," I said.

"I know."

He described it without drama. He had released his aura—fully, without restraint, the way he had in the hall the night of the ceremony—and Silas had gone to his knees before he could decide not to. A Gamma who had spent years enforcing Ironveil's hierarchy, who had put his hand on my arm and walked me to the front of that hall like I was an errand, on his knees in Silvercrest's tree line because he had finally met something his body could not argue with.

I thought about Silas's face in the hall. The way he hadn't looked at me when he said the Alpha wanted me at the front. Not cruel—just indifferent, the way you are indifferent to furniture.

"What did you say to him?" I asked.

Dashiell looked at me steadily. "I told him the next scout Carter sends will not walk back."

Quiet. Absolute. I believed it completely.

"Did he deliver the message?"

"He did." A pause. "He didn't meet Carter's eyes when he did."

I turned that over. Something shifted in my chest—not quite satisfaction, but adjacent to it. The particular feeling of watching a structure begin to understand its own instability.

Silas had spent three years looking through me. Now he had looked at what stood between me and Ironveil and come home without meeting his Alpha's eyes.

The walls Carter had built were starting to understand what they were holding up.

I learned about Yasmin more slowly. In pieces.

Maren mentioned it first, almost in passing—a she-wolf from Ironveil's allied circles had been asking questions at a regional healer's gathering. Diplomatic. Sympathetic. A concerned Luna, worried about instability near her territory.

Then one of the Silvercrest border guards reported a Nighthollow Pack attendant photographing the road markers near the outer boundary. Nothing aggressive. Just documentation.

Then Dashiell told me about the collapse.

A pack gathering, three territories over. Yasmin had gone pale and caught herself on a table and allowed herself to be helped to a chair, and every wolf in the room had seen it, and every wolf in the room had drawn the obvious conclusion about a pregnant Luna under stress.

I listened to all of it without speaking.

When Dashiell finished, I asked: "The Winter Solstice Banquet."

He looked at me. Something shifted in his expression—not surprise exactly. More like recognition.

"Six weeks," I said.

"Yes."

I had managed Ironveil's diplomatic calendar for three years. I knew every regional event, every attendance pattern, every occasion where multiple packs gathered in neutral space with Lycan Council members in the room.

Yasmin was building something. Witness accounts, documented proximity, a reputation for fragility. She was laying the foundation for a story she hadn't told yet, and she was choosing her audience carefully.

I pressed my fingers to the scar on my neck and felt it—fainter, fainter, almost gone—and thought about the six weeks between now and the Banquet, and what she intended to do with them.

"She's going to need me close," I said. "When it happens. Whatever it is, she needs me in the room."

Dashiell said nothing. He was watching me with that particular quality of attention he had—still, total, like nothing else in the world existed to be looked at.

"Then we make sure," he said finally, "that when she builds her stage, we already know the script."

Outside, the north grounds were going dark. Somewhere six weeks away, Yasmin was rehearsing.

I kept my hand against my neck and let the silence sit between us, and for the first time since the hall, it felt less like waiting and more like preparation.
