After My Mate Chose the New Luna Novel Cover

After My Mate Chose the New Luna

At exactly 10:14 PM on a devastating Tuesday night, my world fell apart. Under the cold glow of the full moon and before three hundred members of our pack, the sacred bond was severed. Weston's touch vanished from my skin as the ceremonial candles flickered. In that hollow moment of ultimate betrayal, Morgan Carr stepped forward in ceremonial white to claim my place as the new Luna, leaving me with a shattered heart.

Chapter 2

The pack gathering wasn't scheduled. That should have been my first warning.

I was in the property lawyer's office when Sienna's text came through: *Morgan called assembly. Main hall. Now. You should know.*

I didn't ask what I should know. Sienna Voss had left a covered plate outside my door three times during the worst nights after I'd stopped taking whatever Johanna had been putting in my food. She never said anything about it. Neither did I. But I remembered.

The main hall was full when I arrived. Not ceremonial-full like the rejection night, but packed enough that wolves lined the walls. Morgan stood at the front near the Alpha's dais. She'd changed out of the ceremonial white into something more practical — dark jeans, a fitted jacket. Luna-casual. The kind of outfit that said she belonged there.

Weston sat in the Alpha's chair, but his posture was different. Stiffer. Like he was waiting for something he didn't want to happen.

I stayed near the back. No one looked at me directly, but I felt the weight of three hundred peripheral glances.

Morgan's voice carried easily across the hall. She had that gift — the ability to sound reasonable even when she wasn't being reasonable at all.

"We need to address the territorial filings," she said. Her tone was measured. Concerned. "Audrey Daniels has submitted multiple claims against this pack and its Alpha. Claims that threaten our stability and our governance."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd.

"She's declared a debt of over three hundred thousand dollars," Morgan continued. "She's claimed ownership of pack lands through a deed that hasn't been verified by council authority. And she's done all of this while refusing to accept the natural order of pack hierarchy."

Natural order. The phrase landed like she'd planned it to.

Gamma Titus Roberts stepped forward from his position near the dais. He was a broad-shouldered wolf with the kind of presence that came from years of enforcing pack discipline. He'd mocked my wolflessness more than once. Called me "defective" to my face during a training session when I was nineteen.

"The Luna's right," Titus said. His voice was blunt. Certain. "Audrey's wolfless. She has no scent. She can't shift. By every measure that matters, she's not pack material. She's barely wolf material."

A few wolves laughed. Not loud, but enough.

"She's acting like a rogue," Titus continued. "Unstable. Aggressive. Making claims she has no right to make. I propose we reclassify her status formally. Omega at best. More likely, we should declare her an interloper and revoke what little access she has left."

The murmurs grew louder. I watched faces in the crowd. Some looked uncomfortable. Most looked like they were waiting to see which way the wind blew.

Johanna stood near the front, her Luna composure perfectly intact. She didn't speak, but she didn't need to. Her presence was endorsement enough.

I stayed silent. My leather notebook was in my bag. The deed was in my car. The documentation was filed. None of this — the gathering, the proposal, Titus's speech — changed any of that.

But something inside me was listening. That thing that had stirred when Weston rejected me. The thing that had been growing stronger since I'd stopped taking the pills.

It didn't like Titus's voice.

Sienna Voss stood up.

She was mid-ranked. A Delta, maybe low Gamma on a good day. She worked in the pack's administrative office, filed reports, kept records. I'd seen her at her desk a hundred times. We'd never spoken beyond basic pleasantries.

She looked at Morgan, then at Titus, then at the crowd.

"The deed is a matter of legal record," Sienna said. Her voice was quieter than Morgan's, but it cut through the noise. "Not pack opinion. Audrey's mother held the original territorial claim. It passed to Audrey upon her death. That's documented with the regional council. It's not a claim. It's a fact."

The hall went quiet.

Titus turned to face her. "You're defending a wolfless—"

"I'm stating what's legally accurate," Sienna interrupted. She didn't raise her voice. "If we're going to have this conversation, we should start with facts. The deed exists. The debt filing is valid under pack contract law. Whether we like it or not doesn't change the documentation."

Morgan's expression shifted. Just slightly. The concerned-Luna mask slipped for half a second, and underneath it was something colder.

"Sienna," Morgan said carefully, "I understand you want to be fair. But fairness has to account for pack stability. Audrey's actions are destabilizing. Surely you can see that."

"What I see," Sienna said, "is a she-wolf who contributed more to this pack than most of us combined, and who's being treated like a threat because she asked to be paid back."

Someone near the front muttered agreement. Someone else hissed for silence.

The room split. Not evenly. Not loudly. But I could feel it — the fault line opening.

Morgan noted it too. Her gaze tracked across the crowd, landing on faces, cataloging who stayed silent and who didn't.

Weston finally spoke. His Alpha tone rolled through the hall, pressing down on every wolf present.

"This assembly is dismissed," he said. "We'll address territorial matters through proper council channels. Not here."

The crowd began to disperse. Slowly. Reluctantly.

Sienna caught my eye as she moved toward the exit. She didn't smile. Didn't nod. Just looked at me for two seconds longer than necessary.

I stayed until the hall emptied. Morgan and Weston left through the side door. Johanna followed them, her heels clicking against the stone floor.

Titus was the last to leave. He paused near the back exit, looked at me, and said, "You don't belong here."

I met his eyes. "I own the ground you're standing on."

He left.

I walked out into the night air. My phone buzzed. Another unknown number. I almost deleted it without reading.

Then I saw the message: *Your belongings have been removed from the guest room. You can collect them from the lawn.*

I drove back to the pack house.

The pile was exactly where they said it would be. My clothes shredded into strips. My mother's letters soaked in something that smelled like bleach and cleaning fluid. My leather notebook — the one I'd left on the altar — sitting on top of the pile, pages swollen with rainwater.

I stood there for a long moment.

That thing inside me growled. Low and steady. Not loud enough for anyone else to hear.

I crouched down and picked up the notebook. The ink had bled through most of the pages, but the impressions were still there. The pressure of my pen over seven years of documentation, pressed deep enough into the paper that water couldn't erase it.

I took out my phone and photographed everything. Every shredded piece of clothing. Every ruined letter. The notebook. The pile itself.

Then I called the property documentation service I'd been using for the deed filings. They arrived in twenty minutes with a notary and a witness.

We inventoried every item. Assigned fair market value. Documented the destruction.

I added it to Weston's debt ledger.

The new total was three hundred seventy-eight thousand, four hundred twelve dollars.

I sent Morgan a formal notice of property destruction. Itemized. Legally binding.

Then I drove to a hotel on neutral territory and checked in for the night.

My phone buzzed again an hour later. Sienna: *They're saying you're unstable. Thought you should know.*

I typed back: *I'm documented.*

Her response came immediately: *Good.*

I set my phone on the nightstand and lay back on the hotel bed. The bond mark on my neck was still cold. Still hollow.

But the thing inside me wasn't hollow at all.

It was waiting.
