Chapter 3

Carter did not ask questions.

He did not look at the scratches on Coraline's face and wonder why they were so perfectly spaced, so deliberately drawn. He did not look at my hands and notice the absence of blood under my nails. He did not look at the water still dripping from my hair, pooling on the tile beneath me, and ask himself why I was soaking wet if I had been the one attacking.

He just looked at Coraline crying on the floor, and he believed her.

Every word.

"Carter." My voice came out broken. "Please. She's lying. She did this to herself. She shoved my head in the toilet, she —"

"I said enough."

His hand was already changing. I watched it happen in slow motion — the fingers lengthening, the nails thickening into claws, dark fur rippling up his forearm. A partial shift. The kind Alphas use when they need to remind you what they are.

What they can do.

He crossed the small bathroom in one step. Grabbed my broken leg with that clawed hand.

And squeezed.

The sound I made was not a scream. It was something worse. Something the body produces when it understands that the person who swore to protect it forever has become the thing it needs protection from.

I felt the bone give. Not break — it was already broken. This was different. This was the bone turning to splinters under his grip, the fragments grinding against each other, the structure that was supposed to hold me upright collapsing into something that would never be right again.

"You don't touch her," Carter said. His voice was low. Controlled. Worse than shouting. "You don't go near her. You don't speak to her. Do you understand me?"

I could not answer. I could not breathe. There was only pain, white and total, erasing everything else.

"Do you understand me, Anastasia."

I tried to nod. My head moved maybe an inch. It was enough.

He released my leg.

I collapsed forward, my forehead hitting the cold tile. Somewhere far away I heard Coraline's soft, satisfied exhale. Somewhere closer I heard Carter murmuring to her, his voice gentle again, asking if she was okay, if she needed the healer, if she wanted him to stay.

And underneath all of that, inside my chest where the mate bond had lived warm and bright for three years, I felt something begin to rot.

Not snap. Not sever cleanly the way I had heard it described in whispered stories. This was slower. Darker. Like flesh around a silver wound, blackening from the inside out, the tissue dying in layers.

I lifted my head.

Carter was still crouched beside Coraline, his hand on her shoulder, his back to me. He had already forgotten I was there.

I looked at that back. At the shape of him. At the man I had loved with everything I had.

And I understood, with absolute terrible clarity, that he was never going to believe me. That no matter what I said, no matter what proof I offered, he had already decided who I was. The jealous ex-lover. The disturbed girl who could not let go. The problem that needed to be managed.

The bond pulsed once in my chest. Weak. Struggling.

I reached for it. Not to hold on. To let go.

"Carter," I said.

He did not turn around.

"Carter. Look at me."

Something in my voice made him pause. He glanced back over his shoulder. His eyes were flat. Impatient.

I held his gaze.

"I, Anastasia," I said. My voice was steady. I do not know how. "Reject you, Alpha Carter of Ironcliff, as my mate."

The bond did not snap.

It tore.

I felt it rip through me like silver through living tissue, shredding everything soft and vital on its way out. My wolf howled. Not in grief. In agony. The kind of agony that rewrites your nervous system, that teaches your body a new language of pain it will never forget.

Across the small bathroom, Carter made a sound I had never heard him make. A choked, airless gasp. He staggered. His hand went to his chest, clawing at his shirt as if he could reach inside and stop what was happening.

Coraline's eyes went wide.

"What did you do," Carter whispered. He was looking at me now. Really looking. "Ana. What did you —"

But I could not hear the rest.

The pain crested. My vision grayed at the edges, then went black. The last thing I felt was the cold tile under my cheek and the absolute, final silence where the bond used to be.

I woke to the smell of antiseptic and the low hum of medical equipment.

Not the recovery room. Somewhere else. Brighter. I turned my head — slow, careful — and saw white walls, a window with pale curtains, an IV stand beside the bed.

The pack hospital. The real one.

I did not remember being moved.

My leg was in a cast now, elevated, wrapped in layers of white plaster that went from my ankle to my hip. I stared at it. It did not feel like part of my body anymore. It felt like something bolted on. Something foreign.

I reached down the mind-link.

Nothing.

Not the corroded hum from before. Not even static. Just a blank space where Carter used to be, like a room with all the furniture removed. I pressed my hand to my chest. The bond scar was still there under my palm, but it was cold now. Dead tissue.

Footsteps in the corridor.

I turned my head toward the door, expecting a nurse. Expecting Miriam. Expecting no one who mattered.

The door opened.

And a man I had never seen before stepped inside.

He was tall. Broad-shouldered. His aura hit me before he spoke — not an Alpha's aura, something bigger, older, a weight that made the air in the room feel heavier. He had dark hair, sharp features, and eyes the exact color of mine.

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he smiled. It was not a happy smile. It was the smile of someone who has been searching for a very long time and has finally, finally found what he was looking for.

"Hello, Anastasia," he said quietly. "My name is Alex. And I've been looking for you for a very long time."
