Chapter 3

It happened in the upstairs corridor, just outside the linen closet, with three delta wolves as witnesses.

I was carrying a stack of folded towels. Jasmine stood at the far end of the hall with her arms crossed and her chin lifted, and Ian stood two steps behind her, hands in his pockets, watching me the way he watched things he had already decided about.

"Kneel," he said.

The Alpha tone slid under my skin like it always had—that low, weighted pull that bypassed thought and reached straight for muscle. My knees bent. My body began to comply before my mind caught up, the old reflex moving through me like water finding its channel.

Then my wolf hit it.

She slammed against the compulsion from the inside, and the force of it drove the air out of my lungs. I stumbled sideways and caught myself on the wall with one hand, towels sliding to the floor. One of the deltas took a step back. Another one made a sound I couldn't identify.

I stood there with my palm flat against the plaster and felt her—the thing inside my ribs that had been pushing for days, hot and silver and furious—pushing now with a force that was nothing like before.

"Kneel," Ian said again, "and apologize to Jasmine for disrespecting her household."

Full tone this time. He had reached for it deliberately—I saw the tell, the half-second where his jaw set and his eyes lost focus, the micro-expression I had catalogued over five years without ever having a name for what I was watching. He was reaching for the thing he had always used to make me small.

My wolf surged.

I straightened.

The compulsion broke apart like something brittle, and what replaced it was a steadiness so complete it almost frightened me.

"No," I said.

Quiet. No tremor. One syllable.

I bent down and picked up the towels. I walked past him toward the end of the hall. My shoulder passed within two feet of his chest and I did not flinch and I did not hurry.

He didn't follow.

I heard Jasmine say his name behind me, sharp and questioning, and I heard the silence where his answer should have been. He couldn't explain it. I knew that. I had felt the command land and break, and so had he, and neither of us had words for what that meant yet.

But I was starting to.

---

Mara found me in the corridor outside the server room an hour later.

She didn't say anything at first. She just fell into step beside me, checked the hall in both directions, and pressed a sealed envelope into my hands. Brown paper. My name in her handwriting, small and precise.

"Don't open it here," she said.

I looked at her. Her face was neutral in the way that healers' faces go neutral when they are carrying something they are not allowed to put down.

"Mara."

"Downstairs," she said. "Somewhere private." She paused. "I should have asked sooner. I didn't. That's in there too."

She turned and walked back toward the clinic wing without looking back.

---

I opened it on the cot in the storage room with the door bolted and the single overhead bulb throwing yellow light across the pages.

Mara had been thorough. Six pages of clinical documentation, typed and signed, with photographs of the silver-laced scarring along my left flank and the older bruising she had catalogued during my admission. Dates. Measurements. Tissue analysis. The kind of record that would hold up before a healer's board, or a Council tribunal, or any institutional body that required evidence rather than testimony.

At the bottom, in her handwriting:

*These injuries predate your Luna title. The silver scarring is consistent with a rogue ambush—not a training accident, not a domestic incident. The pattern suggests repeated, untreated exposure over a period of years. Someone should have asked how you got them. No one did. I am asking now, and I am documenting the answer regardless of whether you give it to me. These records exist. They are yours. Use them however you need to.*

I sat with the pages in my lap for a long time.

She had seen the ambush scars. She had understood what they meant. She had written it down and signed her name to it and given it to me without being asked, in a building where the Alpha had spent five years ensuring that no one looked too closely at anything that might complicate his authority.

I pressed my palm flat against my sternum. My wolf was quiet now—not gone, just still, the way a held breath is still.

I folded the pages back into the envelope. I opened the hollowed cover of Middlemarch and laid the envelope flat against the ledger pages and the portable drive.

Evidence of fraud. Evidence of espionage. Evidence of my own body, witnessed and signed.

It was almost enough.

---

Far away—farther than I could feel or know—something else was moving.

I didn't know it yet. But somewhere across two state lines, in a forest clearing I had never seen, a woman stopped mid-stride and pressed her fingers to the cold earth and lifted her face into the wind.

She had been searching for a long time.

And the wind, for the first time, was answering.
